COUGARS DEFEAT RIVER HAWKS, FALL TO DRAGONS IN SOFTBALL
3-16-09
CC 5, UML 1
MSM 2, CC 1 (8 inn.)
KISSIMMEE,
Fla. - The Caldwell College softball team split a pair of games at the Rebel
Spring Games on Monday, beating UMass-Lowell 5-1 before losing to Minnesota
State-Moorhead, 2-1 in eight innings. The Cougars are now 2-4 on the season.
A four-run first inning proved to be enough against the River Hawks in the
first game. Senior Gina Capardi (West Caldwell, NJ/Caldwell) and
junior Danielle Genovese (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) both had
run-scoring doubles, while two more runners came home on an error. Sophomore
Annie Forte (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) hit her first home run
of the season in the fifth inning for a 5-0 lead. The River Hawks scored
their only run of the game in the top of the sixth on a sacrifice fly by
Katelyn Hebert.
Freshman pitcher Kaitlyn McFarlane (Secaucus, NJ/Immaculate
Conception) went the distance, allowing an unearned run on three hits for
her first career victory.
In the game against Moorhead State, Molly Keeler singled home a run for a
1-0 Dragons' lead. The Cougars tied the game in the top of the fifth, when
freshman Rebecca Ashley (Bellingham, MA/Mt. St. Charles Acad.) came
home on a single by junior Kyrie Timbrook (Los Gatos, CA/Los Gatos),
pictured. The game remained tied into extra innings. In the bottom of the
eighth, Casey Lindseth, who was placed on second, advanced to third on a
passed ball. Aman Hoefer followed with a single down the left field line to
plate Lindseth with the game-winning run.
Freshman Juliette Wilson (Dallas, OR/West Salem) gave up two runs,
one earned, on 10 hits while striking out five in seven innings in a solid
effort. Kari Sagehorn tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings to earn the win.
Caldwell plays Central Missouri and Wayne State on Tuesday, Mar. 17 at the
Rebel Games. The games start at 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.
