3-17-09
CM 3, CC 2
WS 7, CC 5
KISSIMMEE,
Fla. - The Caldwell College softball team dropped a pair of games at the
Rebel Spring Games on Tuesday, losing to Central Missouri, 3-2, and falling
to Wayne State, 7-5 at the Osceola County Sports Complex. The losses drop
the Cougars to 2-6 on the year.
Against Central Missouri, Caldwell scored runs in the first two innings to
take a 2-0 lead. Sophomore Annie Forte (Toms River, NJ/Toms River
North) drove in senior Gina Capardi (West Caldwell, NJ/Caldwell) in
the first, then freshman Kelly Ryan (Woonsocket, RI/Mt. St. Charles
Acad.) bunted home freshman Marisa Tamez
(Fountain Valley, CA/Fountain Valley) from third base in the second. The
Jennies scored a run in the bottom of the second, then tied the game in the
fourth on a home run by Krista Cummings. The score remained 2-2 until the
bottom of the seventh. With two out and runners on first and second, Kelli
Kurka singled to right-centerfield, scoring Kassie McClure for the
game-winning run.
Forte pitched five innings and gave up six hits and two runs for Caldwell.
Freshman Kaitlyn McFarlane (Secaucus, NJ/Immaculate Conception)
tossed 1 2/3 innings of relief and took the loss. Central Missouri's Megan
Leonard struck out 14 in a complete-game victory.
In the second game of the day, the Cougars jumped out to an early lead with
three runs in the bottom of the first. Junior Kyrie Timbrook (Los
Gatos, CA/Los Gatos) hit a two-run double, then later scored on an error for
a 3-0 lead. But the Warriors answered with five runs in the top of the
second, including three on a homer by Amanda Van't Wout. After Capardi,
pictured, scored a run in the bottom of the third, Wayne State put two more
runs on the board in the top of the fifth for a 7-4 lead. Freshman Katie
Margiotta (Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) singled home junior Brittni
Frantellizzi (Binghamton, NY/Susquehanna Valley) in the sixth, but
that's as close as the Cougars would get. The loss is Caldwell's third in a
row in Florida.
Ryan, Capardi and Margiotta each had two hits in the game for Caldwell,
which had nine hits in the game but left six runners on base.
The Cougars complete their Florida trip with games against
Wisconsin-Parkside and Minnesota State-Moorhead on Wednesday, Mar. 18.
