CALDWELL SOFTBALL ENDS REBEL GAMES WITH SPLIT
3-18-09
CC 3, MSUM 2
UWP 5, CC 1
KISSIMMEE,
Fla. - The Caldwell College softball team defeated Minnesota State-Moorhead,
3-2 before losing to the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, 5-1 on Wednesday
at the Fortune Road Sports Complex. The results end the Rebel Spring Games
for the Cougars, who went 3-7 during their stay in Florida.
Against Moorhead, the Cougars erased a 1-0 deficit in the bottom of the
fourth with a two-run single by freshman Marisa Tamez
(Fountain Valley, CA/Fountain Valley). Tamez then drove in freshman Kelly Ryan
(Woonsocket, RI/Mt. St. Charles Acad.) in the bottom of the sixth for a 3-1
advantage. The Dragons scored a run in the top of the seventh and had
runners at second and third with two out, but freshman
pitcher Kaitlyn McFarlane (Secaucus, NJ/Immaculate Conception)
retired the final batter on a groundout to end the threat and the game.
McFarlane allowed a run and three hits in three innings of relief to record
her first career save.
Senior Kristen de la Campa (Whitman, MA/Whitman Hanson) picked up her
first win of the season after giving up a run on four hits in four innings
of work. Tamez and junior Danielle Genovese (Livingston,
NJ/Livingston) each had two hits in the win.
In the day's second game, the Cougars surrendered runs in the first and
third innings to trail Wisconsin-Parkside 2-0. Junior Kyrie Timbrook
(Los Gatos, CA/Los Gatos) singled home senior Gina Capardi (West
Caldwell, NJ/Caldwell) in the top of the fourth to put Caldwell on the
board. But the Rangers scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth,
including a solo home run by Amy Horn, to put the game out of reach.
Freshman Juliette Wilson (Dallas, OR/West Salem) went the
distance and took the loss after allowing seven hits and five runs, two
earned, in six innings. Capardi recorded two hits for Caldwell in the loss.
Caldwell returns north to begin its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference
schedule. The Cougars play at the University of the Sciences on Saturday,
Mar. 21 before hosting Wilmington University on Sunday, Mar. 22 at Caldwell
Field. Both doubleheaders start at 1:00 p.m.
