CALDWELL SOFTBALL RANKED FIFTH IN NCAA EAST REGION

4-16-09
CALDWELL, N.J. - With less than two weeks remaining in the regular season, the Caldwell College softball team was included in the NCAA Division II East Region rankings at No. 5, the NCAA announced Wednesday. The Cougars, who are 21-11-2 overall on the season, went 6-0 last week against region opponents to enter the rankings for the first time this season.

Caldwell began the week with a sweep of Pace University in a non-conference doubleheader behind the strong pitching of sophomore Brittany Pulido (Ojai, CA/Nordhoff) and freshman Kaitlyn McFarlane (Secaucus, NJ/Immaculate Conception). It was more of the same in a two-game sweep of Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference foe Post University, as Cougar pitching held the Eagles to a total of nine hits and two runs in the two victories. Against Adelphi University, ranked eighth in the region, Pulido tossed a two-hit shutout in a 5-0 win in Game 1. In the second game, Caldwell fell behind 8-4 heading into the seventh. Junior Kyrie Timbrook (Los Gatos, CA/Los Gatos), pictured, blasted a three-run home run, then freshman Marisa Tamez (Fountain Valley, CA/Fountain Valley) hit a two-run single with the bases loaded to win the game, 9-8. Pulido was named the CACC Pitcher of the Week, while Tamez earned CACC Player of the Week honors.

The region rankings will be used to select the eight participants in the NCAA East Region Tournament, which begins May 8. The champions of the three conference tournaments in the region will receive automatic bids to the regional, with the final five bids going to the highest ranked teams remaining. Caldwell has played in four of the last five regional tournaments. The Cougars won the 2004 Northeast Region Tournament and advanced to the Women's College World Series.

Caldwell continues its schedule with a CACC doubleheader at Nyack College on Thursday, Apr. 16.
