CALDWELL SOFTBALL TAKES TWO AT GEORGIAN COURT TOURNEY

LAKEWOOD, N.J. - The Caldwell College softball team won a pair of non-conference games at the Georgian Court Tournament Saturday afternoon, defeating the University of Bridgeport and Molloy College by identical scores of 3-1. The results give the Cougars a 14-8-1 record on the season.

In the day’s first game, the Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a double by junior Kyrie Timbrook (Los Gatos, CA/Los Gatos) that scored junior Danielle Genovese (Livingston, NJ/Livingston). Bridgeport tied the game in the top of the fourth on a solo home run by Amanda Wentz. The homer was the first hit of the game off of Caldwell pitcher Brittany Pulido (Ojai, CA/Nordhoff), who had retired the first 11 batters. The Cougars took the lead for good with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Freshman Katie Margiotta (Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) singled home sophomore Annie Forte (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) for the first run. An error allowed sophomore Patti Garofolo (Collegeville, PA/Springford) to score from third for a 3-1 lead.

Genovese, pictured, and Timbrook each had two hits to pace the Cougar bats. Pulido went the distance, striking out seven and walking one in seven innings to improve to 5-1. Madison Smith gave up six hits and three runs, two earned, in a complete-game effort for Bridgeport (5-16).

Caldwell trailed Molloy (12-13), 1-0 in the second game going into the top of the seventh. A single by freshman Marisa Tamez (Fountain Valley, CA/Fountain Valley) and a
double by freshman Kelly Ryan (Woonsocket, RI/Mt. St. Charles Acad.) put runners at second and third with one out. Genovese stepped to the plate and hit a three-run home run to left field that gave the Cougars a 3-1 lead. Freshman pitcher Kaitlyn McFarlane (Secaucus, NJ/Immaculate Conception) retired the Lions in order in the bottom of the seventh to earn the win and improve to 3-2.

Genovese, Tamez and senior Gina Capardi (West Caldwell, NJ/Caldwell) had two hits apiece in the win. Freshman Juliette Wilson (Dallas, OR/West Salem) pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing four hits and an unearned run while striking out four and walking one. Molloy pitcher Lauren Urbont went the distance and gave up nine hits and three runs.

The Cougars continue play at the Georgian Court Tournament on Sunday, Apr. 5. Caldwell faces Dowling College at 3:00 p.m. before taking on Kutztown University at 5:00 p.m.
