COUGARS OPEN CACC PLAY WITH SWEEP OF USP IN SOFTBALL
3-21-09
CC 7, USP 1
CC 2, USP 0
PHILADELPHIA,
Penn. - The Caldwell College softball team took two games from the
University of the Sciences, 7-1 and 2-0, in the first Central Atlantic
Collegiate Conference doubleheader of the season Saturday afternoon at
McNeil Field. The sweep gives the Cougars a 5-7 overall record on the year,
while the Devils fall to 4-14.
In Game 1, Caldwell scored two runs apiece in the second and third innings
to take a 4-0 lead. Freshman outfielder Katie Margiotta (Sewell,
NJ/Washington Twp.) hit a two-run triple in the second to score juniors
Brittni Frantellizzi (Binghamton, NY/Susquehanna Valley) and Kyrie
Timbrook (Los Gatos, CA/Los Gatos). Timbrook and senior infielder
Gina Capardi (West Caldwell, NJ/Caldwell) had run-scoring hits in the
third. In the fourth, Margiotta led off with a single, then later scored on
an error for a 5-0 lead. Junior shortstop Danielle Genovese
(Livingston, NJ/Livingston) drove home freshman Rebecca Ashley
(Bellingham, MA/Mt. St. Charles Acad.) with a single in the sixth before
senior Kim Aguirre (Highland, CA/San Gorgonio) scored an unearned run
in the seventh.
Sophomore pitcher Brittany Pulido (Ojai, CA/Nordhoff), pictured,
tossed five shutout innings while giving up five hits to pick up her first
victory of the season. Timbrook went 3-for-3, while Genovese and Margiotta
each had two hits.
The Cougars received strong pitching in Game 2 as well, with freshman
Juliette Wilson (Dallas, OR/West Salem) holding the Devils to four hits
and no runs while striking out five and walking none in six-plus innings.
Caldwell scored the only run it would need in the first inning, when
freshman outfielder Kelly Ryan (Woonsocket, RI/Mt. St. Charles Acad.)
led off with a single, stole second and later scored on an error. Margiotta
added another run in the top of the seventh for a 2-0 lead. In the bottom of
the seventh, Wilson hit the leadoff batter and was relieved by Pulido, who
induced a ground ball to second that resulted in a double play. After Ashley
Tobin doubled, Pulido struck out the final batter to earn the save.
Wilson improved to 2-4 with the victory, while USP's Rachel Morgan took the
loss after allowing two unearned runs on six hits in a complete-game effort.
Margiotta went 3-for-3 to finish with five hits on the day, while Ryan
recorded a pair of hits in the win.
The Cougars host Wilmington University on Sunday, Mar. 22 in the first home
doubleheader of the season. The first game is set to start at 1:00 p.m. at
Caldwell Field.
