BENNETT, FRASER RECEIVE ALL-REGION HONORS FROM NSCAA

12-19-07
CALDWELL, N.J. - Caldwell College men's soccer players Chad Bennett (Kingston, Jamaica/Campion) and Andrew Fraser (Kingston, Jamaica/Wolmer's) were named to the NSCAA/adidas all-New England Region second team, the NSCAA announced. This is the second all-Region honor for both Bennett and Fraser, who were included on the Daktronics all-new England Region second team earlier this season.

Fraser, a senior defender, makes his second appearance on the NSCAA all-Region second team having received the honor in 2005. He also was named all-Region by Daktronics in 2006 and 2007. A four-time all-CACC honoree, Fraser was named to the all-conference first team for the third straight season this past fall. This season, he helped lead a defense that recorded eight shutouts while allowing 21 goals in 20 games. A two-time member of the CACC All-Academic Team, which requires a 3.5 cumulative grade-point average or higher, Fraser was selected to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District first team. In his 78 game career, Fraser totaled six goals and five assists for 17 points. He is a part of a senior class that won 47 games from 2004-07, the most victories in any four-year period in the history of the men's soccer program at Caldwell.

This is the first time the NSCAA has honored Bennett, a junior forward who led the Cougars in scoring this season with 10 goals and one assist for 21 points to earn a spot on the all-CACC first team. An all-CACC second team selection in 2006, Bennett had two game-winning goals, including an overtime golden goal in a 2-1 victory over Molloy on Sept. 13. He was named to the CACC all-Tournament team after scoring a goal in a 2-0 win over Bloomfield College in the quarterfinal. In 46 career games at Caldwell, Bennett has tallied 19 goals and six assists for 44 points.

The Cougars, coached by Jamie  Nash, finished the 2007 season 10-6-4 and advanced to the CACC Tournament semifinals for the fifth straight year.

HARRIOTT CHOSEN TO ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICA THIRD TEAM

11-19-07

CALDWELL, N.J. - Caldwell College senior midfielder Nicholas Harriott (St. Catherine, Jamaica/Campion) was selected to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America College Division third team in voting conducted by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Harriott is the first student-athlete at Caldwell College to earn Academic All-America honors from CoSIDA.

Student-athletes must have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.20 and be a starter or significant reserve to be nominated. Eight All-District first and second teams are chosen, with first-team members appearing on the ballot for Academic All-America honors. Harriott, senior defender Andrew Fraser (Kingston, Jamaica/Wolmer's) and senior midfielder Jan Marco Jiras (Lima, Peru) all made the All-District 2 first team and were nominated for Academic All-American. The College Division includes all NCAA Division II and III institutions.

"I can't think of anyone who is more deserving for an honor like this than Nicholas," said Caldwell men's soccer coach Jamie Nash. "He is a perfect example of what you want out of a student-athlete. He takes care of things in the classroom and is productive on the field. This is a great honor for Nicholas and he has a bright future ahead of him."

Harriott is a biology major at the College with a perfect 4.0 grade-point average. He also is a two-time member of the CACC All-Academic Team. In his four-year career at Caldwell, he played in 66 games with 37 starts for the Cougars, tallying six goals and nine assists for 21 points. Last fall, Harriott was named to the CACC all-Tournament Team. He also was chosen an Arthur Ashe Scholar Athlete by Diverse Magazine in April. In addition to his performance academically and athletically, Harriott is the president of the Tri-Beta Biology Society at Caldwell. He also served as president of Caldwell's International Student Organization last year.

Harriott, who will graduate from Caldwell College in the spring, plans on attending medical school next year. He is the only native of Jamaica among the 66 men's soccer players on the six University and College Division Academic All-America teams.

"This is a very big accomplishment that signifies the value of hard work and determination," Harriott said. "I attribute my success to my mother Annmarie Reid, who has been a constant source of motivation in my life."

Harriott and the Cougars finished 10-6-4 this past fall and advanced to the CACC Tournament semifinals for the fifth straight year. He is a part of a senior class that won 47 games from 2004-07, the most victories in any four-year period in the history of the men's soccer program at Caldwell.

CALDWELL, N.J. - Two first-half goals allowed the Caldwell College men's soccer team to defeat Bloomfield College, 2-0 in the quarterfinals of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament Monday afternoon at Caldwell Field. The win puts the third-seeded Cougars (10-5-4) into the semifinals against second-seeded Wilmington College, while Bloomfield ends its season at 3-12-3. This is the fifth straight year the Cougars have advanced to the conference tournament semifinals.

Just two minutes, 50 seconds into the contest, junior Kevoi Walters (Clarendon, Jamaica/Clarendon) and sophomore midfielder Justin Miller (Monroe, NJ/Monroe) worked a give-and-go down the left flank that sprung Walters in behind the Bloomfield defense. Walters (pictured) scored from 12 yards out for a 1-0 Cougar lead. Then in the 24th minute, junior forward Chad Bennett (Kingston, Jamaica/Campion) intercepted a pass, dribbled to the right of the goal and placed a shot over goalkeeper Julian Gaviria and into the upper left corner of the net for his team-leading 10th tally of the season. Caldwell held off the Deacons the rest of the way for the victory.

Junior goalkeeper John Plaugic (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) stopped two Bloomfield shots to record his eighth shutout of the season. Gaviria made three saves in goal for Bloomfield.

The Cougars face Wilmington in the CACC semifinals on Wednesday, Oct. 31 at Tryon Field in Rutherford, N.J. Game time is set for 1:30 p.m. following the other semifinal between top-seeded Dominican College and fourth seed Holy Family University.

It was Broderick's third goal of the season.

The Tigers were forced to play with 10 men after a player received two yellow cards in the 72nd minute. Another Holy Family player was sent off less than a minute after Broderick's goal, leaving the Tigers with just nine players for the final 5:35.
