BROOKVILLE, N.Y. - The Caldwell College softball team withstood a late comeback attempt to defeat Georgian Court University, 9-6 in the first round of the NCAA Division II Northeast Region Tournament Wednesday afternoon at the C.W. Post Softball Complex. The victory advances the Cougars (34-20) through the winner’s bracket to play top-seeded C.W. Post on Thursday, May 8. Freshman Annie Forte (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) had three hits and drove in two runs as Caldwell tallied 12 hits in the win.

Two runs in the first and four more in the second allowed the fourth-seeded Cougars to jump out to an early 6-0 lead. Forte singled home senior Nicole Bodrog (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) for the game’s first run. Junior Gina Capardi (West Caldwell, NJ/Caldwell) also scored in the first on an error. Then in the second, a two-run double by Capardi sparked a four-run inning that also saw Forte and sophomore Danielle Genovese (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) single home runs. Genovese put Caldwell ahead 7-0 with a run-scoring single that plated freshman Patti Garofolo (Collegeville, PA/Spring Ford) in the third.

But Georgian Court, seeded fifth in the tournament, battled back with five runs in the fifth inning to make the score 7-5 Caldwell. Heather Walker struck the big blow with a two-out grand slam. Then in the sixth, Julie Sito made it a one-run game with a sacrifice fly that scored Michelle Ferraiuolo. But the Cougars scored a pair of insurance runs when the Lions dropped a fly ball with two outs in the seventh, allowing senior Alyssa Speno (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo) and sophomore Sydney Day (Houston, TX/Stratford) to come home.

As was the case in Caldwell’s 11-4 victory over the Lions in the final of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament, the top of the order dominated Georgian Court pitching. Bodrog, Genovese, Capardi and Forte combined to go 9-for-14 (.643) with six RBIs and five runs. Freshman pitcher Brittany Pulido (Ojai, CA/Nordhoff) went the distance and gave up six runs on six hits to improve to 17-7 on the season. Samantha Sasko lasted just 1 1/3 innings, allowing six runs on six hits.

Caldwell is scheduled to play host C.W. Post on Thursday, May 8 at 4:30 p.m.

CALDWELL, N.J. - For the fourth time in five years, the Caldwell College softball team won the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament after defeating 18th-ranked Georgian Court University, 11-4 in the final Saturday afternoon at Caldwell Field. The Cougars (33-20), who earned the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Northeast Region Tournament with the victory, pounded out 18 hits to set a new CACC Tournament record. Senior Nicole Bodrog (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape), left, went 3-for-4 with two doubles and four runs and was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.

The Cougars set the tone early with a five-run second inning. Freshman Patti Garofolo (Collegeville, PA/Spring Ford) singled home sophomore Brittni Frantellizzi (Binghamton, NY/Susquehanna Valley) for the game's first run, then scored on a double by sophomore Danielle Genovese (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) for a 2-0 lead. Junior Gina Capardi (West Caldwell, NJ/Caldwell) hit a two-run double to put the Cougars ahead 4-0, then came home on a single by freshman Annie Forte (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) for a 5-0 advantage.

In the bottom of the second, Stacey Ryan hit a run-scoring double for the Lions' first run of the game. Heather Walker's RBI single in the third made it 5-2 Caldwell. Capardi drove in Bodrog with a single in the top of the fourth, but Georgian Court's Nicole Fortino hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth to cut the deficit back to three, 6-3. Two more Caldwell runs in the fifth on RBIs from Bodrog and Capardi gave the Cougars an 8-3 advantage. Again the Lions used the long ball, as Walker hit her eighth homer of the season to make the score 8-4 Caldwell. But the Cougars put the game out of reach with three more runs in the top of the seventh for an 11-4 advantage.

The first four batters in Caldwell's lineup dominated today, going 12-for-16 with four doubles, eight runs and eight RBIs. Capardi finished the day 4-for-4, while Genovese had three hits and Forte recorded two hits and drove in two runs.

Freshman Brittany Pulido (Ojai, CA.Nordhoff) pitched her third strong game of the tournament, holding the potent Georgian Court offense to four runs on seven hits in six innings to improve to 16-7. She joined Bodrog, Capardi, Frantellizzi and Genovese on the all-Tournament Team. Walker, Ryan, Autumn Florez and  Samantha Sasko made the all-Tournament Team for Georgian Court (39-14). Sasko pitched five innings and took the loss. Earlier in the day, Georgian Court eliminated Holy Family University with a 2-1 victory to advance to the final.

CALDWELL, N.J. - Freshman pitcher Brittany Pulido (Ojai, CA/Nordhoff) tossed a three-hit shutout to lead the Caldwell College softball team to a 2-0 victory over 18th-ranked Georgian Court University in the winner's bracket of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Friday afternoon at Caldwell Field. The win advances the second-seeded Cougars (32-20) to Saturday's final at 1:00 p.m., while the top-seeded Lions (38-13) will play Holy Family University in an elimination game at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday.

The game's only runs were scored in the top of the fourth inning. Senior Alyssa Speno (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo) and sophomore Brittni Frantellizzi (Binghamton, NY/Susquehanna Valley) hit back-to-back singles. Then with two out and runners on first and second, freshman Patti Garofolo (Collegeville, PA/Spring Ford) singled to right-centerfield, scoring Speno. She then advanced to second, and when Georgian Court attempted to throw out Garofolo, the throw was dropped, allowing Frantellizzi to come home from third.

Pulido made the lead stand, allowing just one hit the rest of the way to improve to 15-7. The victory is her seventh shutout of the season and second against a nationally-ranked team, joining her three-hit gem against No. 5 Lock Haven in a 1-0 win. Junior Gina Capardi (West Caldwell, NJ/Caldwell) and sophomore Danielle Genovese (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) had two hits apiece in the win, which is Caldwell's second victory in three games with Georgian Court this season. The Lions' Samantha Sasko, the 2008 CACC Pitcher of the Year, gave up two runs, one earned, on eight hits to fall to 27-7.

In the day's first game, Dominican College eliminated the University of the Sciences with a 3-1 win. The Lady Chargers scored all three of their runs in the second inning, including two runs on a double by Kristine Knuth. But Dominican could not make it three wins in a row in elimination games, as fourth-seeded Holy Family defeated the Lady Chargers, 3-1. Kim Hockenbrock's two-run double sparked a three-run fifth inning that proved to be too much to overcome, advancing the Tigers into the tournament's final day.

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - The Caldwell College softball team finished its regular season schedule with a split of a non-conference doubleheader with the University of Bridgeport Sunday afternoon at Seaside Park. The Cougars, who won the first game 4-3 in eight innings before losing Game 2, 3-2, are now 30-20 on the season. The Purple Knights, who play in the East Coast Conference, are 22-22. Caldwell's victory in Game 1 clinched the program's fifth consecutive 30-win campaign.

In the first game, Bridgeport broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run by Tricia Lee. The Cougars came back to tie the game in the top of the sixth on a double by junior Gina Capardi (West Caldwell, NJ/Caldwell) that plated sophomore Danielle Genovese (Livingston, NJ/Livingston). After sophomore Sydney Day (Houston, TX/Stratford) bunted Capardi over to third, sophomore Kyrie Timbrook (Los Gatos, CA/Los Gatos) singled home Capardi for a 2-1 Caldwell lead. But Lee forced extra innings by leading off the seventh with her second homer of the game for a 2-2 tie.

The teams used the international tie-breaker rule in the eighth, and placed a runner on second base to start each half of the inning. After Genovese was hit by a pitch for the third time in the game, Capardi's groundout moved Genovese to second and senior Nicole Bodrog (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) to third. Freshman Annie Forte (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) followed with a double that scored both runners for a 4-2 lead. Bridgeport scored a run in the bottom of the eighth, but junior pitcher Cecilia Goforth (Houston, TX/St. Agnes Acad.) retired the final two batters to clinch the win.

Goforth pitched all eight innings and allowed three runs, two earned, on six hits and three walks while fanning three to improve to 7-2. It was her third win in three starts this week. Brittany Steiner also went the distance for the Purple Knights to fall to 5-6.

Bridgeport took the early lead again in Game 2, scoring a run in the second and two more in the fifth for a 3-0 advantage. In the top of the sixth, Bodrog and Genovese each hit solo home runs with two outs to pull the Cougars to within one, 3-2. Caldwell advanced runners to second and third with one out in the top of the seventh, but the Cougars were unable to bring home the tying run. The loss snapped Caldwell's seven-game winning streak.

Forte (6-3) took the loss after giving up six hits and three runs, one earned, while striking out four in six innings of work. Lee held the Cougars to two runs on four hits in seven innings to improve to 7-10.

Caldwell hosts the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament this week, beginning Thursday, May 1. The Cougars are the No. 2 seed and will play its first game at 2:00 p.m. at Caldwell Field.

CALDWELL, N.J. - In its final regular-season games at home, the Caldwell College softball team defeated Holy Family University, 3-1 and 4-1 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Caldwell Field. The wins also mark the end of the CACC regular season for the Cougars, who clinched second place with a 19-5 conference record (29-19 overall). Holy Family opened the scoring in the first game, when Kristilyn Obert led off the top of the first with a double and later scored on a single by Lauren Armstrong. Then in the bottom of the first, a two-run double by freshman Annie Forte (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) that brought home sophomore Danielle Genovese (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) and junior Gina Capardi (West Caldwell, NJ/Caldwell) put the Cougars on top 2-1. Caldwell added another run in the bottom of the fifth, when Capardi singled home freshman Patti Garofolo (Collegeville, PA/Spring Ford) for a 3-1 lead. Holy Family put two runners on with nobody out in the top of the seventh, but junior pitcher Cecilia Goforth (Houston, TX/St. Agnes Acad.) recorded a strikeout and two groundouts to end the game.

The Cougars led 1-0 until the top of the fifth, when Armstrong hit a two-out single that scored Kim Hockenbrock from second base to tie the game at 1-1. In the bottom of the fifth, Genovese delivered a two-run single to left-center that plated Bodrog and fellow senior Carrie Flasphaler (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) for a 3-1 Caldwell lead. So far, Caldwell is 140-63 during their careers.

Timbrook and Forte each singled home runs in the fifth, then junior Gina Capardi (West Caldwell, NJ/Caldwell) hit a bases-loaded triple in the sixth to put Caldwell on top 5-3. But the Lady Deacons staged a comeback, tying the game in the bottom of the seventh on a two-run double by Nicole Cagnino. Bloomfield almost won the game in the seventh, when Fauna Ryerson hit a long fly ball to deep center, but Flasphaler reached over the fence and made the catch.

Neither team scored in the eighth before Caldwell put four runs on the board in the ninth. With junior Kim Aguirre (Highland, CA/San Gorgonio) placed on second to start the inning, Timbrook and Speno hit back-to-back singles to score Aguirre and take a 6-5 lead. Three Bloomfield errors resulted in three more runs and a 9-6 Caldwell advantage. Bloomfield scored a run in the bottom of the ninth but could not get any closer, as the Cougars wrapped up their sixth CACC sweep this season. Timbrook went 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI, while Capardi and Forte each recorded two hits.

Forte pitched all nine innings for Caldwell, allowing five runs, four earned, on 13 hits and five walks to improve to 4-3 on the year. Ryerson took the loss after lasting 6 1/3 innings and giving up three runs, none earned, on seven hits.

LAKEWOOD, N.J. - The Caldwell College softball team split a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader with league-leading Georgian Court University, winning the first game 4-1 before losing 6-5 in Game 2 Monday afternoon at GCU Field. The Cougars, who took a 5-3 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning in Game 2, are now 23-19 overall and 13-5 in the league. The Lions are now 32-10, 18-1 CACC.

Caldwell scored all four of its runs in Game 1 in the top of the fourth inning. With the bases loaded and one out, sophomore Danielle Genovese (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) was hit by a pitch, scoring the first run of the game. Junior Gina Capardi (West Caldwell, NJ/Caldwell) followed with a single that scored sophomore Sydney Day (Houston, TX/Stratford). Then freshman Annie Forte (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) delivered a two-run single to left field to make the score 4-0. Georgian Court ended the shutout bid of freshman pitcher Brittany Pulido (Ojai, CA/Nordhoff) with a run in the bottom of the seventh. But Pulido got the final two batters to ground out, ending the game.

Pulido improved to 12-6 after allowing eight hits and one run. Samantha Sasko took the loss after giving up four runs, three earned, in four innings.

In the second game, Genovese again stepped to the plate with the bases loaded in the second inning. Instead of getting hit by a pitch, she blasted a grand slam to left field for a 4-0 Caldwell lead. The Cougars made it 5-0 after scoring a run on an error in the top of the fourth. A two-run home run by Jessica Comisky in the bottom of the fourth and a solo shot by Nicole Fortino in the fifth cut the deficit to 5-3. Then in the bottom of the seventh, the Lions loaded the bases with no outs. After a force out at home, a walk made the score 5-4 Caldwell. After another force out at home left Georgian Court down to its last out, Courtney Cuevas singled to right field, scoring two runs for a 6-5 Lions' victory.

Pulido relieved freshman starter Lisa Federico (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North), giving up three runs on three hits in 2 2/3 innings to take the loss. Federico, who was making her first collegiate start, allowed three runs on three hits in four innings of work. Diana Sansevera went the distance for the Lions, allowing five runs on eight hits while striking out five.

Caldwell faces Bloomfield College on Tuesday, Apr. 22 in another important CACC doubleheader. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.

NEW CASTLE, Del. - The Caldwell College softball team took one of two games of a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader at Wilmington University, winning the first game 1-0 in eight innings before falling 7-5 in the second game Saturday afternoon at Asbury Field. The results give the Cougars a 12-4 record in the conference (22-18 overall), while the Wildcats (26-14) are 13-5 in the CACC.

The Cougars scored the only run of Game 1 in the top of the eighth, when senior Nicole Bodrog (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) led off with a single, advanced to second on an error and scored on a single by junior Gina Capardi (West Caldwell, NJ/Caldwell). Freshman pitcher Brittany Pulido (Ojai, CA/Nordhoff) handcuffed the Wildcats, allowing just four hits in eight innings for her sixth shutout of the season. Katie Turner gave up one earned run on five hits in 7 1/3 innings for Wilmington.

Wilmington took a 4-0 lead early in Game 2 before Caldwell scored runs in the fourth and fifth innings on RBIs from Bodrog and fellow senior Alyssa Speno (Waterloo, NJ/Waterloo), pictured. Wilmington answered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth to go ahead 7-2. A run-scoring single by sophomore Danielle Genovese (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) and a two-run homer from Capardi in the sixth cut the deficit to 7-5, but it would not be enough to avoid the split.

Pulido started the second game as well, giving up five hits and four runs, one earned, in four innings to fall to 11-6 on the season. Kim Lawrence earned the win for the Wildcats after allowing five runs on six hits and four walks in 5 2/3 innings.

Freshman Annie Forte (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) took the loss for Caldwell, while Christine Stathes allowed three hits and two runs in five innings for the win.

LODI, N.J. - Junior Gina Capardi (West Caldwell, NJ/Caldwell) hit two home runs on the day to help the Caldwell College softball team sweep a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader with Felician College Wednesday afternoon at Kennedy Park. The Cougars scored seven runs in the top of the seventh inning for a 9-7 comeback victory in Game 1, then cruised to an 8-1 win in Game 2. The results give Caldwell a 21-13 overall record and an 11-1 mark in the conference, while the Golden Falcons fall to 12-18, 7-10 CACC.

In the first game, Capardi's two-run home run in the top of the third put the Cougars on top 2-0. But the lead didn't last, as Felician scored six runs on six hits in the bottom of the fourth, sparked by a grand slam from Samantha Ortiz. The Golden Falcons maintained the upper hand until the top of the seventh, when Caldwell loaded the bases on a walk, a single and an error. Senior Nicole Bodrog (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) followed with a single that scored senior Carrie Flasphaler (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads), then sophomore Danielle Genovese (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) walked to bring home freshman Patti Garofolo (Collegeville, PA/Spring Ford) to make the score 6-4. With the bases still loaded, Capardi's single was misplayed by the left fielder, allowing all three base runners to score for a 7-6 Caldwell lead. A two-run double by sophomore Brittni Frantellizzi (Binghamton, NY/Susquehanna Valley) made it 9-6. Felician scored a run on a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the seventh, but freshman pitcher Brittany Pulido (Ojai, CA/Nordhoff) induced a pop-up to end the game with three runners on base.

Pulido started the game and pitched four innings, then re-entered in the seventh to earn the save. Freshman Annie Forte (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) earned the win after pitching 2 2/3 innings of relief.

Another home run by Capardi, a solo shot in the top of the fourth, accounted for the first run of the second game. She now has a team-leading five home runs on the season. In the fifth, the Cougars scored three runs on two singles, an error, a groundout by Capardi and a solo home run by Forte for a 4-0 lead. Four more runs in the seventh made it 8-0. Sophomore Sydney Day (Houston, TX/Stratford) led off the inning with a double, then Bodrog hit her first home run of the season. Forte singled home a run, and sophomore Kyrie Timbrook (Los Gatos, CA/Los Gatos) brought home another run for an 8-0 lead.

Felician scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to break up the shutout bid of junior pitcher Kristen de la Campa (Whitman, MA/Whitman Hanson), who gave up one run on eight hits and four walks while striking out three in seven innings. Bodrog, Capardi and Forte each had two RBIs in the win, which wrapped up Caldwell's fifth sweep in six CACC doubleheaders. Capardi also has hit a home run in three consecutive games.

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. - Junior Gina Capardi (West Caldwell, NJ/Caldwell) hit a solo home run in the top of the ninth inning to give the Caldwell College softball team a 2-1 victory over 13th-ranked C.W. The Cougars, who earned the extra-inning win after losing the first game 13-1, are now 19-13 on the season, while the Pioneers are 27-12.

Trailing 1-0 in the second game, the Cougars tied the score in the top of the third, when senior Nicole Bodrog (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) doubled, then later scored from third on a passed ball. Both teams failed to score through the seventh, forcing extra innings. The Pioneers loaded the bases with two out in the bottom of the eighth, but Caldwell pitcher Brittany Pulido (Ojai, CA/Nordhoff) induced a fly out to left to end the inning. In the top of the ninth, Capardi, who left the game with an injury in the third inning, re-entered and led off the inning with a home run to left field, her third of the season. C.W. Post moved a runner to second with two out in the bottom of the ninth, but the next batter grounded out to Pulido to end the game.

Pulido (10-3) pitched all nine innings, allowing seven hits and one run while striking out six and walking three. The victory is the second of the season for the Cougars and Pulido, who blanked No. 5 Lock Haven University, 1-0 on Mar. 15. Junior pitcher Kristen de la Campa (Whitman, MA/Whitman Hanson) took the loss to fall to 3-5 on the season, while Samantha Yodowitz held Caldwell to five hits and one run in five innings to improve to 14-6.

The Cougars return to action on Wednesday, Apr. 16 with a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader at Felician College.
