This past season the Cougars, coached by Dean Johnson, advanced to the NCAA East Region Tournament after placing second in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference during the regular season and in the post-season tournament. Caldwell advanced to the final day of the East Regional against No. 7 Le Moyne College, only to lose to the eventual region champion Dolphins. NFCA ALL-REGION TEAMS INCLUDE FOUR FROM CALDWELL

5-14-09

Capardi

Timbrook

Pulido

Ryan

CALDWELL, N.J. - Caldwell College senior Gina Capardi (West Caldwell, NJ/Caldwell) was selected to the NCAA Division II All-East Region first team by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association, the organization announced today. Additionally, junior Kyrie Timbrook (Los Gatos, CA/Los Gatos), sophomore Brittany Pulido (Ojai, CA/Nordhoff) and freshman Kelly Ryan (Woonsocket, RI/Mt. St. Charles Acad.) were included on the All-Region second team.

This is the second year in a row on the NFCA All-Region first team for Capardi, who also was a first team All-American at second base last season. This year she batted .327 with 19 doubles, three triples, two home runs and 31 runs batted in to earn a spot on the all-Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference first team. Also a Daktronics All-East Region second team choice, Capardi is now a candidate for All-America honors as a result of making the NFCA All-Region first team.

Like Capardi, Timbrook made the all-CACC first team and the Daktronics All-Region second team after a standout season at the plate and in the field. She led the Cougars in batting average (.364), hits (63), doubles (19), homers (four), total bases (94), and slugging percentage (.543). Also an excellent defensive player, Timbrook committed just two errors in 498 chances at first base and catcher for a .996 fielding percentage.

This year's All-Region honor is the first for Pulido, who has been the Cougars' top pitcher over the last two seasons. A member of the all-CACC first team, Pulido led the CACC with an earned run average of 1.34 while posting a record of 18-8 with three saves in 36 appearances. She hurled six complete-game shutouts this year, including a three-hitter in a 2-0 victory over Dowling at the NCAA Division II East Region Tournament on May 8. An excellent control pitcher, Pulido walked just 20 batters in 183 innings.

Ryan anchored the Cougars' outfield in her first season, starting all 57 games in centerfield for Caldwell. An all-CACC first team honoree, she led the Cougars in multi-hit games (21), stolen bases (16) and sacrifice hits (16) while batting .312 with 32 runs and 62 hits as the Cougars' primary lead-off hitter. The strong-armed outfielder also recorded five assists from centerfield this season.

The Cougars, coached by Dean Johnson, finished the season 37-18-2 and advanced to the NCAA Division II East Region Tournament for the fifth time in six years.

THREE COUGARS EARN DAKTRONICS SOFTBALL ALL-REGION ACCOLADES

5-13-09

CALDWELL, N.J. - Three Caldwell College softball players were named to the Daktronics All-East Region Softball second team, which was announced today. Senior Gina Capardi (West Caldwell, NJ/Caldwell) and junior Danielle Genovese (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) make their second appearances on the all-region team, while Kyrie Timbrook (Los Gatos, CA/Los Gatos) earns her first all-region award.

Capardi was selected to the all-Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference first team last week after batting .327 with 19 doubles, three triples, two home runs and 31 runs batted in this past season. A first team Daktronics All-American and All-Region selection in 2008, the second baseman also had 15 stolen bases and walked a team-best 29 times. At the NCAA Division II East Region Tournament last weekend, Capardi batted .333 (5-for-15) with two runs and two RBI in four games. She leaves Caldwell after recording 135 hits and 82 RBI in two seasons.

Genovese returns to the All-Region team after making the first team as a freshman in 2007. A three-time all-CACC first team choice at shortstop, she batted .320 with 16 doubles and 25 RBI and led the Cougars with 40 runs. During the regular season, Genovese belted a three-run home run in the top of the seventh to beat Molloy College, 3-1 on Apr. 4. She also hit a home run at the East Regional against Le Moyne College on May 10.

Timbrook repeated as an all-CACC first team honoree this year after leading the Cougars in batting average (.364), hits (63), doubles (19), homers (four), total bases (94), and slugging percentage (.543). An all-CACC first team choice in 2008, Timbrook was named the CACC Player of the Week on Apr. 21 after hitting 10 doubles in 11 games. She also committed just two errors in 498 chances at first base and catcher for a .996 fielding percentage.

The Cougars, coached by Dean Johnson, finished the season 37-18-2 and advanced to the NCAA Division II East Region Tournament for the fifth time in six years.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Caldwell College softball team lost to Le Moyne College, 7-1 and was eliminated from the NCAA Division II Softball Regional Sunday afternoon at Le Moyne's Thomas J. Niland Athletic Complex. The Cougars complete their season with an overall record of 37-18-2. The Dolphins (43-10) will face Georgian Court University in next weekend's Super Regional for a berth in the NCAA Division II Women's College World Series.

Le Moyne broke the game open with four runs on six hits and two Caldwell errors in the bottom of the third inning. The Cougars scored their only run of the game in the top of the fourth on a solo home run by junior Danielle Genovese (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) that made the score 4-1. It was her third home run of the season. But a solo homer from Jennifer Farrelly in the fifth and a two-run single by Leah Ford put the game out of reach for Caldwell, which lost to the Dolphins, 2-1 on Saturday.

Farrelly surrendered just three hits and one run while striking out five to improve to 18-4. Caldwell sophomore Brittany Pulido (Ojai, CA/Nordhoff) gave up nine hits in 4 2/3 innings of work to fall to 18-8 on the season. Senior pitcher Kristen de la Campa (Whitman, MA/Whitman Hanson) pitched a perfect sixth inning in her final performance for Caldwell. Also playing in their last games in the Scarlet, White and Gold were All-American second baseman Gina Capardi (West Caldwell, NJ/Caldwell) and infielder Kim Aguirre (Highland, CA/San Gorgonio).

The Cougars, coached by Dean Johnson, played in their fifth NCAA Division II Region Tournament in the past six years. This year's performance marked the third time that Caldwell won two or more games at the regional, matching last year's outcome. The Cougars won the 2004 Northeast Region Tournament and advanced to the Women's College World Series.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - After losing to top-seeded Le Moyne College, 2-1, the Caldwell College softball team outlasted Dowling College, 7-6 in 11 innings to stay alive at the NCAA Division II East Region Tournament, held at the Thomas J. Niland Athletic Complex Saturday afternoon. The Cougars (37-17-2) will play the 12th-ranked Dolphins in Sunday's final round.

With Caldwell and Dowling deadlocked at 6-6 in the top of the 11th inning, junior Kyrie Timbrook (Los Gatos, CA/Los Gatos) hit a one-out single, then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Marisa Tamez (Fountain Valley, CA/Fountain Valley). Sophomore Annie Forte (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) followed with a clutch double to center to score Timbrook with the go-ahead run. Freshman pitcher Juliette Wilson (Dallas, OR/West Salem) gave up a pair of singles in the bottom of the 11th, but retired the final batter to send the Cougars to the tournament’s final day.

The game was delayed in the top of the third inning with Caldwell ahead 2-1 due to rain. After the grounds crew prepared the field and play was resumed, Forte singled home senior Gina Capardi (West Caldwell, NJ/Caldwell) for a 3-1 lead. Then in the fifth, Capardi, Forte (right) and freshman Katie Margiotta (Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) each drove in runs to put the Cougars ahead, 6-1. But Dowling answered with five runs in the bottom of the fifth on a three-run homer by Stephanie Compitello and a two-run shot from Jackie Hannan.

Wilson (left) tossed seven innings of relief, allowing two runs on five hits in seven innings to earn the win. Forte and Timbrook each had four hits in the game, with Forte driving in three runs. Including the rain delay, the game lasted over four hours.

In the day’s first game, Le Moyne scored its first run in the bottom of the third, when Kelcie Cashel hit an infield single that plated Kate Waltman. Caldwell loaded the bases in the top of the fourth on a double by Capardi and singles from Tamez and Margiotta. A dropped pop-up appeared to score Capardi from third with the game-tying run, but Le Moyne forced the runner at second base to end the inning.

The Dolphins scored another run in the fourth on an error, sacrifice bunt, wild pitch and sacrifice fly by Jennifer Farrelly for a 2-0 lead. Caldwell got on the board in the fifth, when a throwing error off an infield single by Capardi allowed freshman Kelly Ryan (Woonsocket, RI/Mt. St. Charles Acad.) to score from second base. The Cougars threatened again in the top of the seventh, loading the bases with two out. But Farrelly, who pitched three innings of relief, struck out the final batter to end the game.

Sophomore pitcher Brittany Pulido (Ojai, CA/Nordhoff) dominated the Dolphins’ lineup, allowing three hits and two runs, one earned, while striking out two and walking none. Caldwell pounded out 10 hits against Le Moyne pitching but left 10 runners on base. Jenna Vanacore picked up her second win of the tournament, giving up six hits and no runs in four innings of work.

Caldwell and Le Moyne will play on Sunday, May 10 at 12:00 p.m. If the Cougars win, a second game will be played at 2:00 p.m. The winner advances to next week’s Super Regional.

LAKEWOOD, N.J. - The Caldwell College softball team won both of its games on the first day of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament, defeating Wilmington University, 3-0 before beating Bloomfield College, 3-0 Thursday at Georgian Court University. Sophomore pitcher Brittany Pulido (Ojai, CA/Nordhoff), tossed a pair of shutouts, striking out a career-high 11 batters against Wilmington.

In the win over Wilmington, a sacrifice fly from senior Gina Capardi (West Caldwell, NJ/Caldwell) that scored freshman Kelly Ryan (Woonsocket, RI/Mt. St. Charles Acad.) gave Caldwell a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. The score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the sixth, when sophomore Patti Garofolo (Collegeville, PA/Springford) roped a double to centerfield that brought home sophomore Annie Forte (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) and freshman Rebecca Ashley (Bellingham, MA/Mt. St. Charles Acad.) for a 3-0 lead. The Wildcats put two runners on base with two out in the top of the seventh, but Pulido ended the game with her career-high 11th strikeout of the game.

Pulido allowed just three hits and did not walk a batter in her fourth shutout of the season. Junior Danielle Genovese (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Cougars. Wilmington pitcher Katie Turner went the distance and gave up seven hits and three runs, two earned, in the loss.

Pulido continued to sparkle in the game against Bloomfield, holding the Lady Deacons to just two hits while striking out five and walking four. Caldwell broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth, loading the bases with one out. Freshman Samantha Mayer (Neptune, NJ/Neptune), right, came through with a pinch-hit single that plated Ashley for the game’s first run. SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Caldwell College and American International College played a total of 21 innings in a non-conference softball doubleheader Sunday afternoon, with the Cougars winning both games, 2-1 in 12 innings and 8-5 in nine innings at Groff Field. The marathon wins give Caldwell a 29-11-2 record on the season, while the Yellow Jackets fall to 20-18.

The first game remained scoreless through nine innings, with Caldwell sophomore Brittany Pulido (Ojai, CA/Nordhoff) and AIC's Ashley Deegan putting zeros on the scoreboard with outstanding pitching. In the 10th inning, the international tie-breaker was used, and junior Brittni Frantellizzi (Binghamton, NY/Susquehanna Valley) was placed on second to start the top of the inning. After a bunt and an infield single loaded the bases, senior Gina Capardi (West Caldwell, NJ/Caldwell) hit a sacrifice fly to score Frantellizzi for the first run of the game. But the Yellow Jackets tied the game in the bottom of the 10th on a grounder by Ashleigh St. Peter.

St. Charles Acad.) followed with a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Garofolo with the go-ahead run. AIC loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the 12th.
