TIMBROOK RECEIVES FIRST TEAM ALL-AMERICAN HONORS

5-27-10
CALDWELL, N.J. - Caldwell College senior Kyrie Timbrook (Los Gatos, CA/Los Gatos) has been named to both the National Fastpitch Coaches Association and Daktronics Softball All-America first teams, the organizations announced today. Timbrook becomes the second Caldwell College softball player to be chosen a consensus first team All-American, joining former standout Gina Capardi, who received the honor in 2008.

"I am very happy that these organizations are recognizing Kyrie for all her hard work on the softball field and in the class room," said Caldwell softball coach Dean Johnson. "To have two first team All-Americans in the past three years speaks volumes to the quality of student-athlete that is choosing to enroll at Caldwell and compete in the softball program. This is our third All-American since 2004, and individual success could not be achieved without the success of the program. I am very happy for Kyrie. She is well-deserving."

The Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Player of the Year and a first team NFCA and Daktronics all-East Region performer at first base, Timbrook made her third all-CACC first team after leading the conference in batting (.449), runs batted in (68) and hits (80). This year she set single-season school records for RBI, hits, doubles (22), and total bases (132) while tying classmate Danielle Genovese (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) for the home run mark with 10. Nationally, Timbrook ranked 21st in batting average, 16th in RBI, 17th in doubles and ninth in toughest to strikeout, fanning just five times in 178 at-bats. An excellent defensive player at first base, she committed just two errors in 500 chances for a .996 fielding percentage.

After batting .149 while starting 22 of Caldwell's 51 games as a freshman in 2007, Timbrook raised her batting average over 200 points (.354) and made the all-CACC first team as a sophomore. As a junior, she led the Cougars in batting (.364) and had 19 doubles and 41 RBI to earn all-Region second team accolades. For her career, she batted .360 with 211 hits, 49 doubles, 16 home runs and 148 RBI in 211 games to rank third all-time at Caldwell in hits, second in RBI, fourth in doubles, fourth in total bases (306), fifth in homers and ninth in batting average.

Also an excellent student, Timbrook was chosen to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America second team earlier this week. She is a two-time member of the CACC All-Academic Team and is Caldwell's NJAIAW Woman of the Year. Last week she was named the CACC Student-Athlete of the Month for April, becoming the first Caldwell student-athlete to receive the honor. This past fall, Timbrook received the ECAC Robbins Scholar-Athlete Award for achievement in academics and athletics. She graduated from Caldwell with a bachelor's degree in communications.

Along with Timbrook and Capardi, other Caldwell softball All-Americans include Corinne Reiser in 2004 and Kim Mahoney in 2000. This year, the Cougars finished the season 42-16, tied for the CACC regular-season title and advanced to the NCAA East Region Tournament for the sixth time in the last seven years.

Timbrook, who made the NFCA all-Region second team as a junior, was named the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Player of the Year and made her third all-CACC first team after leading the conference in batting (.449), runs batted in (68) and hits (80). This season she set school records for RBI, hits, doubles (22), and total bases (132) while tying Genovese for the home run mark with 10. For her career, she batted .360 with 211 hits, 49 doubles, 16 home runs and 148 RBI in 211 games.

Ryan repeats on the NFCA all-Region second team after another all-CACC first team season in 2010. The Cougars' centerfielder and lead-off batter, Ryan batted .316 with 56 hits, 41 runs and two triples. She also led Caldwell in stolen bases with 16 to tie for second in the CACC. Also a standout on defense, she recorded nine assists from centerfield this year. Ryan, who has 118 hits in two seasons, ranks fourth on the program's all-time stolen bases list with 32 thefts.

WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The Caldwell College softball team was eliminated from the NCAA Division II East Region Softball Tournament with a 2-1 loss to Georgian Court University Saturday afternoon at the University of New Haven Softball Field. The defeat ends Caldwell's season at 42-16, while the Lions (39-18) will play Southern Connecticut State in an elimination game at 4:00 p.m.

Georgian Court's Jessica Comiskey led off the game with a double, then scored when a single by Rachel Ruch was misplayed in the outfield, giving the Lions a 1-0 lead. Caldwell advanced runners to third in the first and third innings but were unable to get the clutch hit. Then in the fourth, senior Kyrie Timbrook (Los Gatos, CA/Los Gatos) led off with a single, and pinch-runner Rebecca Ashley (Bellingham, MA/Mt. St. Charles Acad.) was sacrificed to second by sophomore Marisa Tamez (Fountain Valley, CA/Fountain Valley). Junior Patti Garofolo (Collegeville, PA/Springford) came through with a double to left that plated Ashley with the tying run.

In the fifth, Caldwell put runners on second and third with nobody out following a single by senior Brittni Frantellizzi (Binghamton, NY/Susquehanna Valley) and a throwing error off a bunt from sophomore
Kelly Ryan (Woonsocket, RI/Mt. St. Charles Acad.), who also stole second. But  two strikeouts and a groundout kept the game tied at 1-1. Georgian Court took advantage of the Cougars' missed opportunity with a one-out triple by Comiskey in the top of the sixth. Sammie Garofalo then singled home Comiskey for the go-ahead run. Again the Cougars advanced a runner to third base with two out in the bottom of the sixth, only to strand the runner with a strikeout. A pair of groundouts and a strikeout in the bottom of the seventh ended the game and extended Caldwell's losing streak to a season-high four games. Entering the postseason, the Cougars hadn't lost more than two consecutive contests this year.

Freshman Kourtney Wilson (Islip, NY/St. Anthony's), pictured, pitched a strong game, allowing two runs, one earned, on five hits while striking out three and walking none in a complete-game effort. The Lions' Diana Sansevera held Caldwell to one run on six hits and struck out seven for the win.

The defeat ends the collegiate careers of seniors Frantellizzi, Timbrook and Danielle Genovese (Livingston, NJ/Livingston). The trio played in three NCAA Region tournaments while at Caldwell and won the 2008 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference title.

WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The Caldwell College softball team dropped its first game at the NCAA East Region Tournament, falling to fourth-seeded Southern Connecticut State 1-0 in eight innings Saturday afternoon at the University of New Haven Softball Field. The loss gives the fifth-seeded Cougars a 42-15 overall record and sends them into an elimination game against Georgian Court University on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. The Owls (41-11) will play top-seeded New Haven at 11:00 a.m.

Southern Connecticut put runners on first and second in both the second and fifth innings but did not score. Then in the top of the sixth, the Cougars loaded the bases on a bunt single by sophomore Kelly Ryan (Woonsocket, RI/Mt. St. Charles Acad.), a hit batsman and a walk. With one out, SCSU pitcher Jayme Larson recorded two groundouts to end the threat and keep the game scoreless. The Owls had runners at second and third with two out in the bottom of the seventh, but junior pitcher Brittany Pulido (Ojai, CA/Nordhoff) induced a grounder to send the game into extra innings.

After Larson retired the Cougars in order in the top of the eighth, Brittany Bucko led off the bottom of the eighth with a fly ball to right that was dropped, then stole second. Following a foul out, Megan Caporossi stepped up and lined a single to center. Bucko just beat Ryan's throw home for the game-winning run.

Pulido (20-7) scattered six hits while striking out one and walking one in 7 1/3 innings of work. Larson gave up four hits and struck out three while walking one in a complete-game shutout.

LAKEWOOD, N.J. - The Caldwell College softball team suffered its second loss at the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Softball Tournament, losing to host Georgian Court University Saturday afternoon at the GCU Softball Complex. The defeat eliminates the Cougars (42-14) from the tournament, while the Lions (37-16) advance to the finals against Dominican College.

The Lions scored all seven of their runs in the first three innings. Rachel Ruch hit a two-run home run and Brooke Hull hit a solo shot in the top of the first inning, then Jen Tartaglia hit a home run in the second for a 4-0 lead. A pair of errors, a two-run double by Hull and an RBI single from Donnie Brossoie in the third made it 7-0 Georgian Court. Caldwell began its comeback in the bottom of the third, when CACC Player of the Year Kyrie Timbrook (Los Gatos, CA/Los Gatos) doubled home freshman Dia Cascone (Staten Island, NY/Susan Wagner) and sophomore Kelly Ryan (Woonsocket, RI/Mt. St. Charles Acad.) to cut the deficit to 7-2.

The Cougars put runners on base in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings but did not score. Down to their final two outs in the seventh, Caldwell loaded the bases on two walks and a single. Senior Brittni Frantellizzi (Binghamton, NY/Susquehanna Valley) followed with a single to score sophomore Marisa Tamez (Fountain Valley, CA/Fountain Valley). The next batter, pinch hitter Kelly Schymanski (Pottstown, PA/Owen Roberts) was hit by a pitch, plating junior Patti Garofolo (Collegeville, PA/Springford) to make the score 7-4. After a grounder by Ryan brought home freshman Sierra Parker (Chino Hills, CA/Chino Hills), Cascone hit a two-out single that scored freshman Katie Dellaratta (Deptford, NJ/Deptford) to pull the Cougars to within one, 7-6. With the tying run on second, Lions' pitcher Diana Sansevera struck out the next batter to end the game.

Ryan, pictured, finished the game with three hits, a run and an RBI, while Timbrook and Garofolo each had two hits for Caldwell. Junior Brittany Pulido (Ojai, CA/Nordhoff) lasted two innings and allowed six hits and seven runs, four earned. Freshman Kourtney Wilson (Islip, NY/St. Anthony's) had a strong game in relief, holding the Lions to two hits while striking out four without a walk in five innings. Sansevera went the distance and gave up six runs on 11 hits while walking six and fanning four to earn the win. Cascone, who batted .636 and scored four runs in the tournament, and Timbrook, who hit two home runs and had nine RBI in four games, were named to the CACC All-Tournament Team.

The Cougars, who were ranked fourth in last week's NCAA Division II East Region rankings, will await to hear if they will receive an at-large bid to next week's eight-team East Region Tournament.

The sweep completes the regular season for the Cougars (40-12 overall, 23-3 CACC), who set a school record for regular-season wins in a season while clinching at least a tie for first in the conference standings.

Seniors Brittni Frantellizzi (Binghamton, NY/Susquehanna Valley), Danielle Genovese (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) and Kyrie Timbrook (Los Gatos, CA/Los Gatos) each sparked the Cougar offense in the final home games of their careers. Genovese hit a solo home run in the first inning of Game 1 for a 1-0 lead. The shot to right was her 10th homer of the season, breaking the single-season record of nine held by former Cougars Stacy Falkowski (2007), Katie Jackson (2006) and Theresa Davison (2000). Then in the third, Frantellizzi blasted a three-run home run, her first of the season, for a 4-0 Caldwell advantage. It was Timbrook's turn in the sixth. With runners on first and second and the Cougars leading 6-0, Timbrook doubled off the right field fence to score both runs and end the game at 8-0.

Junior Brittany Pulido (Ojai, CA/Nordhoff) hurled a three-hit shutout, her eighth of the season, to improve to 19-4. She struck out two and did not allow a walk while facing 20 batters. Ali Schmidt took the loss for the Rams (24-18, 16-8 CACC), giving up four runs on six hits in three innings.

In the second game, the Cougars scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the second inning. Timbrook led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Marisa Tamez (Fountain Valley, CA/Fountain Valley) and advanced to third on a passed ball. Junior Patti Garofolo (Collegeville, PA/Springford) stepped up and hit a single up the middle to score Timbrook and give the Cougars the only run they would need. The Rams advanced a runner to to third in both the fifth and seventh innings but did not score. In the seventh, freshman pitcher Kourtney Wilson (Islip, NY/St. Anthony's) struck out the final two batters with Maggie Desmond on third to end the game.

Wilson (16-5) gave up seven hits and struck out five for her third shutout this season. Schmidt went the distance in the second game and held Caldwell to four hits and one run in six innings. Desmond hit two doubles in a 3-for-3 performance at the plate for Philadelphia.

In addition to Genovese's record home run, Timbrook also set a program record with her 20th and 21st doubles of the season. Her double in the fourth inning of Game 2 was her 73rd hit of the season, tying the mark set by former All-American Gina Capardi in 2008 for hits in a season. This is the third time Caldwell has won 40 games overall in a season, following the 45-7 team in 2004 and the 40-11 squad in 2005. The regular-season crown is Caldwell's fifth, having finished first in 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007.

The senior trio of Frantellizzi, Genovese and Timbrook has won 146 games while recording 562 hits, 38 home runs and 322 runs batted in at Caldwell.

The Cougars will begin play at the CACC Tournament on Thursday, May 6 in Lakewood, N.J.

CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College softball team won a pair of close games against Wilmington University in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at a chilly Caldwell Field. The Cougars, who are now 27-11 overall and 13-3 in the CACC, earned a 2-0 victory in Game 1 before taking the second game 4-3 on a bases-loaded, two-out single by senior Kyrie Timbrook (Los Gatos, CA/Los Gatos) in the bottom of the seventh. The Wildcats fall to 16-16-1, 8-8 CACC with the defeats.

Pitching was stingy in the first game, with the teams combining for three hits heading into the bottom of the sixth inning. Wilmington threatened to score in the fifth by loading the bases with one out. But junior pitcher Brittany Pulido (Ojai, CA/Nordhoff) fanned the next batter and induced a grounder to second to keep the Wildcats scoreless. In the bottom of the sixth, sophomore Kelly Ryan (Woonsocket, RI/Mt. St. Charles Acad.) hit a one-out single and later stole second. With two outs, senior Danielle Genovese (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) hit a two-run blast to right for the first runs of the game.

Pulido (14-3) retired the side in order in the top of the seventh to wrap up the win. Over seven innings, she held Wilmington to two hits and no walks while striking out two for her seventh shutout of the season. Ryan had a pair of hits for Caldwell in the win. The Wildcats' Kim Lawrence also pitched a strong game, allowing three hits and two runs while striking out two in six innings.

Genovese (left) continued to swing a hot bat into the second game, as she hit another two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning for her team-leading eighth home run of the season. Timbrook (right) followed with a solo shot for her eighth of the year to tie Genovese for the team lead and put Caldwell on top 3-0. It is the second time this season that Genovese and Timbrook have hit back-to-back home runs. The Wilmington bats woke up in the fifth inning, as Lindsay Watson hit a run-scoring double and then scored on a two-run home run by Brooke Berger that tied the game at 3-3.

The score remained deadlocked heading into the bottom of the seventh. With two outs, Ryan singled and freshman Dia Cascone (Staten Island, NY/Susan Wagner) drew a walk. Wilmington intentionally walked Genovese to load the bases, bringing up Timbrook. After taking the first two pitches, Timbrook roped a single down the left field line, scoring Ryan with the game-winning run. It is the second walk-off hit this season for Timbrook, who is batting a team-leading .478.

Freshman Kourtney Wilson (Islip, NY/St. Anthony's) went the distance for Caldwell, giving up three runs on four hits while fanning two and walking one to improve to 10-5 on the season. CALDWELL, N.J. - A late comeback by American International in the second game prevented the Caldwell College softball team from sweeping the Yellow Jackets in a non-conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Caldwell Field. The Cougars (13-7) won the first game 5-0 before allowing five runs in the top of the seventh in Game 2 to lose 5-4.  AIC is now 7-11 on the season.

Caldwell wasted little time getting on the scoreboard in Game 1, with senior Danielle Genovese (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) hitting a double that scored sophomore Kelly Ryan (Woonsocket, RI/Mt. St. Charles Acad.) in the bottom of the first for a 1-0 lead. Genovese then led off the fourth with a solo home run to left, her second of the season. Sophomore Rebecca Ashley (Bellingham, MA/Mt. St. Charles Acad.) came home on a passed ball to make the score 3-0. In the bottom of the sixth, junior Patti Garofolo (Collegeville, PA/Springford) doubled home freshman Amy Leal (New Bedford, MA/Bishop Stang), then scored on a single from freshman Cassandra Cefolo (Florham Park, NJ/Hanover Park) for a 5-0 lead.

Junior pitcher Brittany Pulido (Ojai, CA/Nordhoff) didn't need much offensive support, as she blanked the Yellow Jackets on just three hits while striking out 10 without a walk in a complete-game shutout. It was the fourth shutout of the season for Pulido, pictured, who is now 7-1 on the season. Erin Gilkes allowed five runs, two earned, on 10 hits in six innings for AIC.

In the second game, Caldwell again scored in the first inning to take the early lead. With two out, Genovese singled, then came home when senior Kyrie Timbrook (Los Gatos, CA/Los Gatos) followed with a double for her team-leading 26th RBI of the season. Freshman pitcher Kourtney Wilson (Islip, NY/St. Anthony's) made the one-run lead hold up through six innings, giving up just two hits heading into the top of the seventh. In their final at-bat, the Yellow Jackets put runners on first and second with one out. The next batter, Ashleigh St. Peter, lined out to Timbrook at first base. Timbrook appeared to tag out Lauran Rousseau before she returned to first base for the game's final out. But the umpires reversed the initial call, giving AIC new life.

AIC took advantage of its second chance, as Katie Elie followed with a double that tied the game at 1-1. After Erin St. Pierre walked to load the bases, Sarah Calgreen hit a grand slam home run over the right-field fence to take a 5-1 lead. Yellow Jackets' pitcher Elizabeth Habib retired the first two batters in the bottom of the seventh, leaving Caldwell down to its last out. But the Cougars mounted their own comeback, getting back-to-back singles from Garofolo and senior Brittni Frantellizzi (Binghamton, NY/Susquehanna Valley), then loading the bases when Ryan walked. Freshman Dia Cascone (Staten Island, NY/Susan Wagner) stepped up and hit a bases-clearing double off the left-field fence to make it a one-run game in favor of AIC, 5-4. With Cascone in scoring position, Habib ended the Cougars' rally with a strikeout to give the Yellow Jackets a 5-4 victory and a split.

Wilson (5-3) ended up allowing five runs on six hits in seven innings. Habib also went the distance, giving up four runs on eight hits while striking out five.

CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College softball team began its 2010 home schedule with a key regional doubleheader with Le Moyne College on Sunday, winning the first game 1-0 before falling 4-1 in the second game. The results give the Cougars a 9-5 record overall, while the Dolphins, who won the 2009 East Region title, are now 2-8.

The first game was a pitching dual between Caldwell junior Brittany Pulido (Ojai, CA/Nordhoff) and Katelyn Fowler of Le Moyne, who kept the scoreboard quiet through five innings. After Pulido retired the side in the top of the sixth while surrendering an infield hit, freshman Dia Cascone (Staten Island, NY/Susan Wagner) led off the bottom of the sixth with a double off the fence in left centerfield. Senior Danielle Genovese (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) bunted Cascone to third, then senior Kyrie Timbrook (Los Gatos, CA/Los Gatos) drove in the game's only run with a sacrifice fly to right. Le Moyne advanced a runner to third with one out in the seventh, but Pulido induced a lineout and groundout to end the game.

Pulido (4-0) scattered four hits in seven innings while walking two and fanning two for her second shutout of the season. Fowler gave up five hits in six innings while striking out four for Le Moyne. Cascone finished with two of Caldwell's five hits, while Kimberlee Baker delivered two hits for the Dolphins.

Le Moyne took advantage of Caldwell errors in the first and third innings to take a 2-0 lead on two unearned runs. In the bottom of the third, freshman Kelly Schmanski (Pottstown, PA/Owen Roberts) singled and later came home on a wild pitch to make the score 2-1 Le Moyne. The Dolphins extended their lead to 4-1 in the fourth, when Leah Ford tripled home Meghan Hart, then scored on a single by Danielle Van Gorder.

Brenna Klein allowed one run on four hits in 5 2/3 innings to earn the win, while Fowler pitched the final 1 1/3 innings to pick up the save. Caldwell freshman Kourtney Wilson (Islip, NY/St. Anthony's) went the distance and gave up 12 hits and four runs, two earned, while striking out three and walking none.

The Cougars host another non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday, Mar. 23, when NYIT visits Caldwell Field. The first pitch is set for 2:30 p.m.

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The Caldwell College softball team split a doubleheader at the Rebel Spring Games Tuesday at the Fortune Road Complex. The Cougars beat Adelphi University 2-1, then lost to undefeated Augustana College 6-1. Caldwell, which has split all four doubleheaders thus far in Florida, are now 4-4 on the season.

After Adelphi took a 1-0 lead with a run-scoring single by Maria Canino, the Cougars tied the score with a run in the bottom of the second. Junior Annie Forte (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) singled, then sophomore Marisa Tamez (Fountain Valley, CA/Fountain Valley) doubled to put runners at second and third with one out. Sophomore Katie Margiotta (Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) followed with a single that plated Forte and tied the game 1-1. In the top of the third, sophomore Kelly Ryan (Woonsocket, RI/Mt. St. Charles Acad.) led off with a single and eventually scored on an error for the go-ahead run. Adelphi threatened in the seventh, as Deandra Leo led off with a double. Amanda Dolen then singled to left, but Margiotta gunned down Leo at the plate, with senior catcher Brittni Frantellizzi (Binghamton, NY/Susquehanna Valley) putting the tag on. Freshman pitcher Kourtney Wilson (Islip, NY/St. Anthony's) retired the final two batters to end the game and give Caldwell its second win over the Panthers in the last three days.

Wilson went the distance to earn the victory, allowing six hits and one run while walking three and striking out six. Christine Robinson lasted five innings and took the loss.

Augustana continued its successful start, winning its 12th game of the season behind the pitching of Chelsey Durland. KISSIMMEE, Fla. - For the third straight day, the Caldwell College softball team took one of two games at the Rebel Spring Games on Monday at Oren Brown Field. The Cougars won the first game 7-4 over the University of Bridgeport, then lost to Minnesota-Duluth 4-0 in Game 2. The results give Caldwell a 3-3 record on the season.

Against Bridgeport (0-3), senior Kyrie Timbrook (Los Gatos, CA/Los Gatos) and sophomore Katie Margiotta (Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) hit run-scoring singles to spark a four-run first inning. After the Purple Knights scored a run in the top of the third, Timbrook crushed a two-run homer to left in the fourth to put Caldwell ahead 6-1. Bridgeport took advantage of two Cougar errors in the top of the sixth, scoring three runs to make the score 6-4. In the bottom of the sixth, freshman Dia Cascone (Staten Island, NY/Susan Wagner) doubled and later scored on an error for a 7-4 Caldwell lead. Junior pitcher Brittany Pulido (Ojai, CA/Nordhoff) shut out Bridgeport in the top of the seventh to wrap up the win.

Pulido started and pitched six innings, allowing a run on six hits while striking out three and walking one for her first victory of the season. Margiotta and junior Annie Forte (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) each had three hits, while Timbrook drove in three runs. Madison Smith went the distance for Bridgeport and took the loss.

In the second game, Caldwell committed three errors in the bottom of the first inning that led to three runs for UMD. Like the defense, the Cougars' offense struggled, producing only a lead-off single by sophomore Kelly Ryan (Woonsocket, RI/Mt. St. Charles Acad.) and a Timbrook double in the fourth. The Bulldogs added a run in the sixth off a grounder by Tyra Kerr for a 4-0 advantage.

UMD pitcher Kristin Danielson allowed just two hits and a walk while fanning 10 in a complete-game effort. Sophomore Juliette Wilson (Dallas, OR/West Salem) started for Caldwell and gave up four runs, one earned, on four hits in five innings.

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The Caldwell College softball team split a pair of games at the Rebel Spring Games, held at the Osceola County Softball Complex Sunday morning. The Cougars (2-2) fell to Shepherd University 2-1 in eight innings, then came back to beat Adelphi University 4-3.

Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third on a solo home run by Tiffany Farmer. The lead held up until the top of the sixth. With freshman Dia Cascone (Staten Island, NY/Susan Wagner) on second and two outs, senior Kyrie Timbrook (Los Gatos, CA/Los Gatos) doubled off the left centerfield fence to plate Cascone and tie the game at 1-1. Neither team scored in their remaining at-bats, resulting in Caldwell’s third consecutive extra-inning game. The Cougars played 21 innings over two games on Saturday.

After Caldwell was held scoreless in the top of the eighth, Tricia Bettura hit the first pitch deep to center, scoring Amber Dudek, who was placed on second per the international tie-break rule, with the game-winning run. Bettura pitched all eight innings, allowing a run on four hits while striking out six for Shepherd (7-0). Freshman Kourtney Wilson (Islip, NY/St. Anthony’s) took the loss, giving up the final hit in 1 1/3 innings of relief. Sophomore Juliette Wilson (Dallas, OR/West Salem) also pitched well, yielding a run on two hits and four walks in 5 2/3 innings.

Against Adelphi, Caldwell fell behind 3-0 after the Panthers scored three times in the top of the third. The Cougars rallied in the bottom of the third with two outs. Senior Danielle Genovese (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) singled home junior Patti Garofolo (Collegeville, PA/Springford), then scored on Timbrook’s two-run single that tied the game at 3-3. Caldwell continued to deliver with two outs, as junior Annie Forte (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) singled home Genovese with two down in the fifth to put Caldwell on top 4-3. Adelphi loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh with two singles and a walk. But Kourtney Wilson struck out the next batter and induced an infield popup to end the game and earn her first collegiate victory.

Wilson gave up three hits in four innings of relief of junior Brittany Pulido (Ojai, CA/Nordhoff), who allowed three runs on five hits in three innings. Timbrook and Genovese each had two hits for Caldwell, while Amanda Dolan and Rochelle Noren had a pair of hits apiece for the Panthers (3-1).

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The Caldwell College softball team worked overtime in its season-opening doubleheader at the Rebel Spring Games, beating St. Cloud State 10-8 in 10 innings before falling to Lock Haven University 8-7 in 11 innings Saturday at the Osceola County Softball Complex. The games, which lasted a combined six hours, are the first two of 12 contest for the Cougars (1-1) in Florida.

In the first game against St. Cloud State, senior Kyrie Timbrook (Los Gatos, CA/Los Gatos) blasted a two-out grand slam home run to deep centerfield in the bottom of the 10th inning for a 10-8 win. Caldwell, which allowed a pair of runs in the top of the 10th to trail 8-6, loaded the bases on two walks in addition to placing a runner on second base in accordance with the international tie-break rule.

After falling behind 5-2 through two innings, the Cougars pulled even with a two-run homer by senior shortstop Danielle Genovese (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) in the fifth and a run-scoring, pinch-hit double from freshman Sierra Parker (Chino Hills, CA/Chino Hills) in the sixth. Following a Huskies run in the eighth, junior Patti Garofolo (Collegeville, PA/Springford) doubled home sophomore Katie Margiotta (Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) to tie the game and set up Timbrook's heroics. Timbrook and Garofolo each had three hits, while Genovese had two hits. Freshman pitcher Kourtney Wilson (Islip, NY/St. Anthony's) allowed five runs on six hits in the first two innings, then blanked the Huskies over the next four innings. She struck out five and walked one. Freshman pitcher Kelly Schymanski (Pottstown, PA/Owen Roberts) worked the last four inning and earned the win. Heather Trobec pitched all 9 2/3 innings for SCSU (7-8) and took the loss, while Ally Koski hit her fourth home run of the season.

In the second game it was Caldwell who took the early lead, taking advantage of four Lock Haven errors to build a 4-1 lead after two innings. Two run singles from Amanda Gutmaker in the fourth and Kelsey Mullins in the fifth allowed Lock Haven (3-4) to take a 5-4 advantage. Freshman Dia Cascone (Staten Island, NY/Susan Wagner) singled home freshman Amy Leal (New Bedford, MA/Bishop Stang) to tie the game at 5-5. In the eighth, Cascone plated Leal with a single for a 6-5 Caldwell lead. With two out and a runner on third in the bottom of the eighth, a Caldwell error allowed Lock Haven to tie the score and extend the game. Again in the 10th, the Cougars scored on a double by Leal that scored Garofolo. But two more errors resulted in another game-tying run by Lock Haven. After holding Caldwell scoreless in the top of the 11th, Lock Haven ended the game in its favor on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly by Brittany Patacky.

Leal finished with two doubles, two walks and three runs in her first career start, while Cascone went 3-for-6 with two RBI for Caldwell. Junior pitcher Brittany Pulido (Ojai, CA.Nordhoff) started and allowed 11 hits and five runs, two earned, in 6 2/3 innings. Schymanski was solid in relief, giving up three unearned runs on two hits in 3 2/3 innings of work. Sarah Morse pitched all but 2/3 of an inning and earned the win for Lock Haven, the defending NCAA Division II national champions.

The Cougars continue play at the Rebel Spring Games on Sunday, Mar. 14, facing Shepherd University at 9:00 a.m. and Adelphi University at 11:00 a.m.
