GASPICH SELECTED CACC ROOKIE OF THE WEEK FOR WOMEN'S TENNIS

CALDWELL, N.J. - Caldwell College freshman Briana Gaspich (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) was named the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Rookie of the Week for women's tennis for the week ending Oct. 16, the league announced. Gaspich won all of her singles and doubles matches to help the Cougars win three duals last week.

In singles play, Gaspich was victorious at the No. 4 singles position in wins over Molloy, Georgian Court and the University of the Sciences, winning all of her matches in straight sets. In doubles, she combined with senior Olga Ndhlovu (Bergenfield, NJ/Bergenfield) for wins at No. 2 doubles against Molloy and No. 3 doubles versus Georgian Court and USciences. In her first collegiate season, Gaspich has compiled a singles record of 8-3, tying senior Sara Wilkins (Williamstown, NJWilliamstown) for the team lead in victories. She also has a 10-1 overall record in doubles, including a 9-1 mark playing with Ndhlovu.

Gaspich and the Cougars complete the 2011 season on Monday, Oct. 17 with a CACC dual against Concordia. The first matches begin at 4:00 p.m. at the Caldwell College Tennis Courts.


 

 

 

 


CALDWELL WOMEN'S TENNIS ENDS SEASON WITH LOSS TO CONCORDIA

CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College women's tennis team wrapped up the 2011 season with a loss to Concordia College, 8-1 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference dual Monday afternoon at the Caldwell College Tennis Courts. The Cougars complete the season with a 6-6 overall record, including a 3-5 mark in conference play, while the Clippers improve to 8-0 overall and in the CACC.

Caldwell's only point came at No. 6 doubles, as the opponent for senior Olga Ndhlovu (Bergenfield, NJ/Bergenfield) was unable to compete due to injury. The Cougars' 6-6 record marked the team's best season since 2006, when Caldwell finished 6-8 overall. This year's squad also won the program's most CACC duals (three) since the conference began sponsoring women's tennis in 2005. Individually, senior Sara Wilkins (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) and freshman Briana Gaspich (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) each had a team-best eight singles victories, while Gaspich and Ndhlovu compiled a 9-2 record in doubles play this season.

The match also marked the final competition for seniors Ndhlovu, Wilkins, Amanda Berry (Swedesboro, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) and Kierra Tims (East Orange, NJ/East Orange).

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Caldwell College women's tennis team won its third dual in a row, beating the University of the Sciences 8-1 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference meeting Saturday afternoon at the McNeil Field Courts. The win gives the Cougars a winning record on the season at 6-5 (3-4 CACC), while the Devils fall to 1-5 overall and in the conference.

Caldwell swept all three doubles matches, as freshmen Paige Alden (Spring Lake Heights, NJ/Manasquan) and Gwynne Alden (Spring Lake Heights, NJ/Manasquan) won at first doubles, seniors Sara Wilkins (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) and Amanda Berry (Swedesboro, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) won their match at second doubles and senior Olga Ndhlovu (Bergenfield, NJ/Bergenfield) and freshman Briana Gaspich (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) were victorious at third doubles. CALDWELL TOPPLES GEORGIAN COURT IN WOMEN'S TENNIS FOR CACC VICTORY

LAKEWOOD, N.J. - The Caldwell College women's tennis team picked up a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference win on Tuesday, defeating Georgian Court University 7-2 in a CACC dual at the Gallagher Tennis Center. The victory evens the Cougars' overall record at 5-5 while improving their league mark to 2-4. The Lions fall to 2-9, 2-4 CACC with the loss.

Caldwell opened the dual with wins at second and third doubles, courtesy seniors Sara Wilkins (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) and Amanda Berry (Swedesboro, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) at second doubles and senior Olga Ndhlovu (Bergenfield, NJ/Bergenfield) and freshman Briana Gaspich (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) at third doubles. In singles play, Wilkins (third), Berry (fifth) and Ndhlovu (sixth) won their matches in straight sets, while Gaspich was leading her match at fourth singles before her opponent retired. Also earning a singles point was freshman Gwynne Alden (Spring Lake Heights, NJ/Manasquan), who was victorious at second singles. The Cougars' win was the first over Georgian Court since the 2004 season, ending a six-match losing streak to the Lions.

Cadlwell plays a make-up dual on Thursday, Oct. 13 against Concordia College, beginning at 3:30 p.m. at the Caldwell College Tennis Courts.

Caldwell won one of the two contested doubles matches, with senior Olga Ndhlovu (Bergenfield, NJ/Bergenfield) and freshman Briana Gaspich (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) earning an 8-1 victory at No. 2 doubles. SPARKILL, N.Y. - For the second time this season, the Caldwell College women's tennis team earned a 7-2 victory over St. Thomas Aquinas College in a  non-conference dual Friday afternoon. The Cougars, who defeated the Spartans on Sept. 16, are now 3-4 on the season, while STAC falls to 2-10.

The Cougars won two out of the three matches at doubles, as freshmen Gwynne and Paige Alden (Spring Lake Heights, NJ/Manasquan) combined for the victory at No. 2 doubles, and freshmen Briana Gaspich (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) and Alyssa Brillante (Pompton Lakes, NJ/Pompton Lakes), pictured, won their match at No. 3 doubles. GOLDEY-BEACOM BLANKS CALDWELL IN WOMEN'S TENNIS

CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College women's tennis team suffered a 9-0 setback to Goldey-Beacom College in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference dual Friday night at the Caldwell College Tennis Courts. With the loss, the Cougars fall to 2-4 overall and 1-3 in the CACC, while the Lightning are now 2-1 overall and in the conference.

Goldey-Beacom won all nine matches in pro sets. The first matches did not begin until 7:00 p.m. due to transportation problems. The Cougars' No. 3 doubles team of senior Olga Ndhlovu (Bergenfield, NJ/Bergenfield) and freshman Briana Gaspich (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) lost for the first time this season, falling to Blanca Sancho and Vanessa Leon 8-1. Ndhlovu and Gaspich are now 5-1 on the season.

Caldwell is scheduled to play at Georgian Court University on Saturday, Oct. 1, beginning at 12:00 p.m. in Lakewood, N.J.

East Stroudsburg won two of the three doubles matches, including a narrow 9-8 decision in a tie-breaker at second doubles. Senior Olga Ndhlovu (Bergenfield, NJ/Bergenfield) and freshman Briana Gaspich (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) remained unbeaten on the season with their fifth victory at No. 3 doubles. In singles, Gaspich was victorious at fourth singles, while seniors Sara Wilkins (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) and Amanda Berry (Swedesboro, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) won their matches at third and fifth singles, respectively. The dual hinged on tie-breaker matches at second and sixth singles, with the Warriors winning both to take a 5-4 victory.

CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College women's tennis team picked up its first victory of the season with a 7-2 win over visiting St. Thomas Aquinas College in a non-conference dual Friday afternoon at the Caldwell College Tennis Courts. The result gives the Cougars a 1-2 mark on the year, while the Spartans fall to 0-5.

Caldwell started the dual off well, winning two of the three doubles matches. Seniors Amanda Berry (Swedesboro, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) and Sara Wilkins (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) won their match at No. 1 doubles, while senior Olga Ndhlovu (Bergenfield, NJ/Bergenfield) and freshman Briana Gaspich (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) remained unbeaten on the season with their third victory at No. 3 doubles. In singles play, Wilkins, Berry and Ndhlovu each won their matches at third, fourth and fifth singles, respectively. Freshmen Paige Alden (Spring Lake Heights, NJ/Manasquan) and Gwynne Alden (Spring Lake Heights, NJ/Manasquan) earned their first collegiate victories at first and second singles, respectively. All five of Caldwell's wins in singles were in straight sets.

Next up for Caldwell is a non-conference dual against Molloy College on Tuesday, Sept. 20. The dual will be held at Adelphi University in Garden City, N.Y., and will begin at 3:30 p.m.

CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College women's tennis team came up short against Philadelphia University, losing 5-4 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference dual Tuesday afternoon at the Caldwell College Tennis Courts. The result keeps the Cougars winless at 0-2, while the Rams improve to 2-3 overall and 1-2 in the CACC.

Philadelphia won two of the three doubles matches, with senior Olga Ndhlovu (Bergenfield, NJ/Bergenfield) and freshman Briana Gaspich (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) winning at No. 3 doubles for Caldwell. Senior Sara Wilkins (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown), right, defeated Brittany Villa in three sets at third singles, while Gaspich and Ndhlovu won their matches in straight sets at fourth and sixth singles, respectively. The key match was at No. 5 singles, where the Rams' Liz Verbitz held off senior Amanda Berry (Swedesboro, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) in three sets, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3, to clinch the dual for Philadelphia.

The Cougars return to action on Friday, Sept. 16 with a non-conference dual against St. Thomas Aquinas. The first matches begin at 1:00 p.m. at the Caldwell College Tennis Courts.

Chestnut Hill won all six singles matches and took two of three in doubles play, Caldwell's lone point came at No. 3 doubles, where senior Olga Ndhlovu (Bergenfield, NJ/Bergenfield), pictured, and freshman Briana Gaspich (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) defeating Danielle Knott and Alexis Puhl, 8-2.

COUGAR WOMEN'S TENNIS SELECTED EIGHTH IN CACC PRESEASON POLL

CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College women's tennis squad was ranked eighth in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Preseason Poll, the league announced. Defending champion Concordia was picked to win the league by the poll, which was voted on by the CACC's nine head coaches.

The Cougars return six players from last year's team that placed eighth with a 1-7 record in conference duals. Among the returnees are seniors Amanda Berry (Swedesboro, NJ/Kingsway Reg.), pictured, Olga Ndhlovu (Bergenfield, NJ/Bergenfield), Kierra Tims (East Orange, NJ/East Orange), and Sara Wilkins (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown). This is the team's first year under the direction of new head coach Bruce Sibley.

Caldwell starts the 2011 campaign with a CACC dual against Concordia on Wednesday, Sept. 7. The matches begin at 3:30 p.m. at the Caldwell College Tennis Courts.

CALDWELL COLLEGE HIRES BRUCE SIBLEY TO COACH TENNIS TEAMS

CALDWELL, N.J. - Caldwell College Executive Director of Athletics Mark A. Corino has announced the hiring of Bruce Sibley to coach the men's and women's tennis teams at Caldwell. Sibley has been a certified tennis professional for the past 10 years.

Most recently, Sibley served as the men's tennis coach at Young Harris (Ga.) College for two seasons, starting the program in 2008. Under Sibley, Young Harris quickly progressed from a new program to a nationally-ranked squad that ranked as high as No. 11 in the National Junior College rankings. A certified strength and conditioning specialist, he also was the strength and conditioning coach at Young Harris. Prior to his stint at Young Harris, Sibley was the boys and girls tennis coach at Charleston School for Math and Science in Charleston, S.C.

In addition to his coaching positions, Sibley was the Junior Tennis Coordinator and Teaching Pro at Radley Run Country Club in West Chester, Pa., and the Assistant Tennis Pro at Racquets in Medford, N.J.

"We are glad to have Bruce join our department and coach our tennis teams," Corino said. "He has the experience and the enthusiasm necessary to build our tennis programs, and we look forward to working with him this fall."

Sibley, who still plays tennis competitively, earned a degree in kinesiology from Charleston Southern University in 2009. A native of Shiloh, N.J., he is returning to his home state after living in Charleston, S.C. Sibley and his wife Becky have two children: Landon and Libby.

 

CALDWELL WOMEN'S TENNIS COMPLETES SEASON WITH LOSS TO MOLLOY

BALDWIN, N.Y. - The Caldwell College women's tennis team was defeated by Molloy College, 8-1 in a non-conference dual Wednesday afternoon at Baldwin Park. The loss marks the end of the 2010 season for the Cougars, who finish with an overall record of 1-13. The Lions improve to 9-7 with the win.

Caldwell's only point came at No. 3 doubles, where senior Kirsty Leedham (Ellesmere Port, England/Cheshire Acad.) and sophomore Elizabeth Odell (Allenwood, NJ/Wall) defeated Annie Ayala and Caitlin Ortiz by the score of 8-3. Leedham, the Cougars' only senior, completes her tennis career at Caldwell having won seven singles matches and seven doubles matches overall.

Seven players from this year's squad return in 2011 for first-year head coach Sean Cotter.
