N.J. - The Caldwell College volleyball team lost two non-conference matches
on the first day of the East Stroudsburg University Tournament, held Friday
at Koehler Fieldhouse. The Cougars (1-5) fell to the host Warriors, 3-0,
then battled the College of St. Rose before losing, 3-2 in the second match.
East Stroudsburg handled Caldwell in the day’s first match, winning 25-14,
25-16, 25-19. Emily Detter had a match-high eight kills, while Lindsey Lullo
had 14 digs for the Warriors (5-3). The Cougars were led by freshman outside
hitter Susan McDonough (Saline, MI/Saline), who tallied seven kills
and a team-best 13 digs. Sophomore setter Lauren Roth (Findlay,
OH/Findlay) also had 18 assists for Caldwell, which had just two fewer kills
than its opponent, but 18 more attack errors.
Against St. Rose, the Cougars dropped the first two sets by scores of 25-23
and 25-22 before rallying to tie the match at two sets apiece. McDonough had
four kills in the third set to help Caldwell to a 25-18 win, then registered
six kills in a 25-15 fourth-set victory. Junior outside hitter Cory
Roesing (Secaucus, NJ/Secaucus) added four kills in the fourth set. But
the Golden Knights bounced back to take the fifth set 15-10 and remain
unbeaten on the season at 8-0.
McDonough finished with 18 kills and a .218 hitting percentage to go with a
career-high 28 digs and five total blocks. Junior outside hitter Justine
Pecora (Clifton, NJ/Mt. St. Dominic Acad.), pictured, had 11 kills and
five blocks, while Roth added 29 assists. Defensively, freshman libero
Maddy Amon (Shelbyville, KY/Bishop Moore) recorded 19 digs, junior
libero Kathleen Estes (Lyndhurst, NJ/Lyndhurst) had 18 digs and
Roesing finished with 17 digs.
The Cougars continue play at the ESU Tournament against Adelphi University
and Holy Family University on Saturday, Sept. 12, beginning at 11:00 a.m.
