CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College volleyball team defeated Goldey-Beacom College in three straight sets, 25-19, 25-16, 25-11 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match Saturday afternoon in the George R. Newman Center. The victory evens the Cougars' record at 5-5 overall and keeps them unbeaten in the conference at 3-0, while the Lightning drop to 6-6 overall, 2-3 CACC.

The first set was close and saw Goldey-Beacom take an 11-9 advantage. But a side-out and seven straight points with sophomore Lauren Herzog (Lodi, NJ/Lodi) serving put the Cougars ahead 17-11. The Cougars maintained the six-point cushion and won the first set, 25-19. Sophomore outside hitter Justine Pecora (Clifton, NJ/Mt. St. Dominic) and freshman middle blocker Titilola Alao (Ossining, NY/Ossining) recorded four kills apiece in the set. Three kills each by Pecora and Alao and four by sophomore middle blocker Keesha Francois (Elkins Park, PA/Cheltenham) helped Caldwell take the second set, 25-16.

The Cougars trailed early in the third set before Herzog served again for an 11-point streak that broke the set open in Caldwell's favor. Four more kills by Pecora and a team hitting percentage of .591 in the third set helped the Cougars cruise to a 25-11 win and the match.

Newman Center. The result comes just three weeks after the Owls easily handled the Cougars in three straight sets in New Haven, Conn., on Sept. 2. Caldwell falls to 3-5 with the non-conference loss, while SCSU improves to 15-3 with its eighth consecutive victory.

The Cougars cruised to a 25-14 win in the first set, hitting a blazing .652 with 15 kills and no errors. The Owls finished off the set with three straight points to tie the match at 1-1.

In the third set, the Cougars tallied 11 kills to just five for SCSU to win 25-16 and move to within one set of the upset victory. But the Owls answered with 13 kills and a .306 hitting percentage in the fourth set for a 25-21 win that forced a fifth and deciding set. Momentum stayed on the visitor's side early in the set, as the Owls jumped out to a 7-1 lead. But Caldwell did not let up, scoring seven of the next eight points to make the score 8-7 SCSU. The two teams alternated points on the next 12 serves, with the Cougars holding off match point once. But with the Owls leading 14-13, Caldwell was unable to tie the match on its serve as SCSU finished off the match with a kill for a 15-13 win.

box score
ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. - Sophomore middle blocker Keesha Francois (Elkins Park, PA/Cheltenham) tallied 13 kills and a .310 hitting percentage to pace the Caldwell College volleyball team to a four-set victory at Molloy College, 26-24, 23-25, 25-17, 25-21 Saturday afternoon at Quealy Gymnasium. The win is the Cougars' second in a row and gives them an overall record of 3-4, while the Lions drop to 3-7.

The victory was Caldwell's first against a non-conference opponent since the program was re-established in 2006. Earlier this season, the Cougars defeated Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference foe USP in a match that does not count in the conference standings.

The first set remained close throughout, with neither team leading by more than two points. A kill by Tina King made the score 24-22 and had Molloy on the verge of taking the first set, but a kill by senior outside hitter Laura Ciesla (Chicago, IL/Lane Tech) forced a side-out and gave Caldwell the serve. Three consecutive kills by the Cougars, including two by Francois and one by freshman right side Amber Mosher (Flanders, NJ/Mount Olive), allowed Caldwell to take the set and a 1-0 lead.

The second set also was tight, but the Lions broke a 23-23 tie and won the next two points to knot the match at 1-1. Caldwell jumped out to a 10-2 lead early in the third set and cruised to a 25-17 win buoyed by a .370 hitting percentage and 14 kills. Again the Cougars took the upper hand early in the fourth set, leading 17-9 at one point. But Molloy came back to pull within two points, 23-21. Sophomore outside hitter Justine Pecora (Clifton, NJ/Mount St. Dominic Acad.) put the set and the match away with back-to-back kills for a 25-21 win.

Freshman setter Lauren Roth (Findlay, OH/Findlay) recorded a career-high 39 assists to help the Cougars put down a season-best 52 kills. Mosher finished with 11 kills and a .270 hitting percentage, while Pecora, Ciesla and freshman middle blocker Titilola Alao (Ossining, NY/Ossining) each tallied eight kills apiece. Defensively, Alao had five total blocks and Francois had four, with sophomore outside hitter Cory Roesing (Secaucus, NJ/Secaucus) recording a team-best 10 digs.

Next up for the Cougars is a non-conference match at home against Southern Connecticut State University on Monday, Sept. 22. The first serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in the George R. Newman Center.

FOUR RECRUITS TO JOIN COUGAR VOLLEYBALL IN 2008

7-9-08
CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College volleyball team will welcome four student-athletes to the program this fall, head coach Megan Hrbek announced. The incoming group includes middle blocker Titilola Alao of Ossining, N.Y., outside hitter Elise Lennon of Secaucus, N.J., right side hitter Amber Mosher of Flanders, N.J., and setter Lauren Roth of Findlay, Ohio. They will join 10 returning players from last year's squad that went 4-24 in its second season of intercollegiate play.

"This class fills some of our needs while increasing the talent level of our team," Hrbek said. "All four student-athletes are dedicated players who understand the commitment it takes to be on a winning team, and they will play important roles in our program's development. I'm looking forward to incorporating them into our group this fall."

Alao earned all-Section and all-League honors as a junior and senior at Ossining High School. A 5-foot-10 middle blocker, Alao was included on the Volleyball Coaches Association Super 70 Select Team last fall. She also was selected her team's Most Valuable Player while playing for Downstate Juniors Volleyball Club in 2007. An excellent student, Alao earned the Superintendent's Scholar Athlete Award as a senior at Ossining.

Lennon teamed with current Cougar outside hitter Cory Roesing (Secaucus, NJ/Secaucus) to lead Secaucus High School to back-to-back Group I state championships in 2005 and 2006. This past fall, she received Group I All-State third team accolades while earning first team all-Hudson County and all-League honors. As a junior, Lennon was selected to the all-League and all-County second teams.

Mosher led Mount Olive High School in kills, blocks and digs as a junior and senior while setting school records for kills and blocks in a career. A two-time all-Iron Hills Conference selection, Mosher was included on the Star-Ledger all-Morris County first team in 2007 after making the second team in 2006. She also was named all-Area by the Daily Record as a junior and senior. This past season, Mosher played in the New Jersey Senior All-Star Game.

Roth comes to Caldwell from Premier Volleyball Club, where Hrbek coached for two seasons before launching Caldwell's volleyball program in 2006. Roth was named to the all-Greater Buckeye Conference second team in 2006 and received all-conference honorable mention in 2007 at Findlay High School. She was the starting setter on the Trojans' back-to-back conference championship teams as a junior and senior. In 2006, she received the Golden Hands Award from Premier.

The Cougars begin the 2008 season on Sept. 2 at Southern Connecticut State in New Haven, Conn.
