Del. - Sophomore guard Jenn Murray (Jackson, NJ/Jackson), pictured,
registered her first career double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds as
the Caldwell College women's basketball team defeated Goldey-Beacom College,
84-75 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Saturday afternoon at
MBNA America Hall. With the win, the Cougars improve to 8-11 in the conference
(9-15 overall) and tighten their grip on the final spot in the CACC
Tournament. Caldwell is currently in eighth place, 2.5 games ahead of Post,
with three games remaining. The Lightning fall to 5-20 overall, 4-16 in the
CACC.
Goldey-Beacom took an early 20-12 lead with 12:43 left in the first half
before Caldwell went on a 17-4 run to lead 29-24 at the 7:24 mark. Murray made
three three-pointers and sophomore guard Shannon Coyle (Matawan, NJ/St.
John Vianney) hit one from beyond the arc in the Cougars' run. The lead would
change hands four more times before the end of the half until Caldwell closed
out the half strong to take a 44-40 advantage into the break. Goldey-Beacom
shot an impressive 56.3 percent from the field in the game's first 20 minutes,
and received 12 points on 6-of-7 shooting from Toni Jones.
The Lightning tied the game up twice early in the second half. With the score
knotted at 50-50 with 16 minutes remaining, the Cougars went on a 10-0 run,
including four points each from Murray and freshman forward Melissa Freeman
(Cresskill, NJ/Cresskill), that essentially clinched the game for Caldwell.
Goldey-Beacom never got closer than six points the rest of the way, with the
Cougars leading by as many as 14.
For the fifth time in six games, the Cougars out-rebounded their opponent,
holding a 48-34 advantage on the boards, including a 22-20 edge on Caldwell's
offensive basket. The Scarlet, White and Gold also dished out 25 assists, led
by a career-high nine helpers from Coyle.
Murray made 4-of-7 from beyond the arc while matching her career best with 10
rebounds. Freeman finished with a career-high 17 points to go with eight
boards while shooting 8-of-14 from the field. Kim Rowley led all scorers with
29 points, including 19 in the second half, and Jones tallied 18 points and
three blocks.
The Cougars return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 22, when they host USP in a CACC
game. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m. in the Newman Center.
