CALDWELL,
N.J. - The Caldwell College women's basketball team dropped a Central Atlantic
Collegiate Conference game to Bloomfield College, 71-46 Tuesday night at the
George R. Newman Center. The loss ends a two-game winning streak for the
Cougars, who are now 6-15 overall and 6-12 in the CACC. The Deacons improve to
13-7, including an 11-6 conference record.
The Deacon used a 15-4 run midway through the first half to break open a
close game and take a 30-17 lead with 6:13 left in the half. But the Cougars
scored the next seven points as part of an 11-2 spree capped by a
three-pointer from freshman guard Laura Ciesla (Chicago, IL/Lane Tech)
that made the score 32-28 at halftime. Caldwell opened the second half with a
conventional three-point play by junior guard Amy Ransom (Chattanooga,
TN/Notre Dame) that cut the deficit to 32-31. After a pair of free throws from
Bloomfield's Marissa Franklin, junior guard Shannon Coyle (Matawan,
NJ/St. John Vianney), pictured, nailed a three-pointer to tie the game at
34-34 with 16:52 to play, ending a 17-4 Cougar run.
Three straight baskets allowed the Deacons to regain the lead at 40-34, but
junior forward Amy Gaudious (Long Branch, NJ/Long Branch) hit a pair of
jumpers to bring Caldwell to within two, 40-38 with 13:28 on the clock. Then
with the score 46-41 at the 8:47 mark, Bloomfield took control of the game,
outscoring Caldwell 31-2 for all but seven seconds of the rest of the game.
Domenica Raymond scored eight points during the run for Bloomfield, which held
the Cougars to 1-of-7 shooting from the field while forcing nine turnovers in
that span.
Coyle finished with 11 points and five assists to lead Caldwell, while
sophomore forward Dana Leary (Bridgewater, NJ/Immaculata) recorded six
rebounds and three steals. Raymond led all scorers with 23 points on 8-of-10
shooting from the floor to pace the Deacons. Franklin pitched in a
double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
The Cougars return to action on Thursday, Feb. 9, when they travel to
Waterbury, Conn., to face Post University. Game time is scheduled for 6:00
p.m.
