CALDWELL,
N.J. - The Caldwell College women's basketball team snapped a seven-game
losing skid with a 75-58 win against Goldey-Beacom College in a Central
Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Saturday afternoon in the George R. Newman
Center. The Cougars improve to 4-11 overall and 4-8 in the CACC, while the
Lightning falls to 3-12 on the season, including a 3-9 conference mark.
The Cougars opened the game shooting a blistering 60.0 percent from the field
to lead by as many as 17 points in the first half. Conversely, Goldey-Beacom
struggled from the floor, making just 8-of-29 (27.6 percent) before halftime.
Sophomore forward Dana Leary (Bridgewater, NJ/Immaculata) made all four
of her shots from the field en route to 10 first-half points, as the Cougars
took a 39-24 advantage into the break.
The Cougars, who led at halftime in their two previous losses, looked to end
that trend with a 10-2 run to open the second half. Caldwell's lead grew to as
many as 27 after baskets by freshmen Alexis Demby (West New York,
NJ/Memorial) and Janay Prim (Ansonia, CT/Kolbe Cathedral) gave the
Cougars a 63-36 lead with 9:13 remaining. The Lightning came as close as 14
points with a 19-6 run that made the score 69-55 with just under two minutes
left. But Goldey-Beacom would get no closer as the Cougars wrapped up their
first win since Dec. 17.
Leary, pictured, finished with 14 points while making all six of her attempts
from the field and both of her free throws. Freshman guard Laura Ciesla
(Chicago, IL/Lane Tech) matched Leary with a career-high 14 points. Ciesla
also swiped three steals. Sophomore forward Melissa Freeman (Cresskill,
NJ/Cresskill) grabbed a team-best eight rebounds to go with 12 points, and
junior guard Shannon Coyle (Matawan, NJ/St. John Vianney) added six
assists and two steals. Goldey-Beacom's Toni Jones recorded a double-double
with 19 points and 13 boards to pace the Lightning.
Next up for the Cougars is a CACC contest at Felician College on Tuesday, Jan.
24. Game time is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
