N.J. - A three-pointer by Annie Alosa with 7.7 seconds remaining proved to be
the difference as Georgian Court University defeated Caldwell College, 59-57
in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference women's basketball game Saturday
afternoon at the George R. Newman Center. The loss drops the Cougars to 5-13
overall and 5-10 in the CACC, while the Lions improve to 5-13 and 4-11 in the
conference.
Caldwell led for most of the first half and held a 28-18 advantage with five
minutes to go in the half. Georgian Court closed out the half with a 10-2 run
to make the score 30-28 in favor of the Cougars at the break. Sophomore
forwards Dana Leary (Bridgewater, NJ/Immaculata) and Melissa Freeman
(Cresskill, NJ/Cresskill), pictured, each scored eight points for Caldwell in
the first half.
The Cougars built the lead back up to 10 points with a 9-0 run that made it
42-32 with 15:22 remaining, and still led 52-43 with 7:44 on the clock. The
Lions made their push with six straight points that cut the deficit to 52-49.
Junior guard Shannon Coyle (Matawan, NJ/St. John Vianney) answered with
a three-pointer at the five-minute mark to put the Cougars up 55-49. Over the
next 3:45, Caldwell turned the ball over three times and missed three shots
from the field as Georgian Court scored six consecutive points to take the
lead for the first time since the 17:39 mark of the first half. Jasmin
Rodriguez capped the run with a three that gave the Lions a 56-55 lead with
1:15 left.
Freeman scored on the Cougars' next possession to retake the lead, 57-56 with
54 seconds to go. After a turnover by Rodriguez, Coyle missed a three-pointer
with 20 seconds left. Barbara Jones grabbed the rebound and passed the ball to
Stephanie Longdo, who dribbled into the frontcourt and found an open Alosa.
Alosa buried a three-pointer with just 7.7 seconds on the clock for her only
basket of the second half to put the Lions ahead 59-57. On the last
possession, Leary had a lay-up bounce off the rim, with Freeman grabbing the
offensive rebound. But Freeman's attempt at the buzzer didn't fall, giving the
Lions the victory and a season sweep of the Cougars.
Freeman finished with a game-high 20 points for Caldwell, while Leary and
Coyle each scored 12 points in the loss. Sophomore guard Phylicia Holmes
(Roselle, NJ/Roselle) grabbed 10 boards to help the Cougars hold a 45-36 edge
on the glass. Longdo had 14 points to pace the Lions, with Jones recording a
game-high 13 rebounds.
Next up for the Cougars is a home game against CACC-foe Dominican College on
Tuesday, Jan. 31. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m. in the Newman Center.
