BLOOMSBURG,
Pa. - The Caldwell College women's basketball team pulled to within one point
after trailing by as many as 15 in the second half, but could not prevent Lock
Haven University from claiming a 65-60 victory Saturday afternoon on the final
day of the Huskies Tip-Off Classic, held at Bloomsburg University. Sophomore
forward Mackenzie Lynch (Wayne, NJ/DePaul Catholic) turned in an
outstanding performance, recording 31 points and 15 rebounds to earn the
tournament's Most Valuable Player honors. The loss drops the Cougars to 1-1,
while the Lady Eagles improve to 2-3.
Lock Haven led for almost the entire game and took an early 25-10 advantage
with seven minutes left in the first half. The Cougars responded with a 12-6
run, buoyed by six points from junior forward Melissa Freeman
(Cresskill, NJ/Cresskill), that made the score 31-22 in favor of the Lady
Eagles at the half. Caldwell was hampered by 24 turnovers in the game's first
20 minutes that led to 21 Lock Haven points.
In the second half, Lock Haven re-established control of the game and restored
its 15-point lead midway through the period. With 4:22 remaining in the game,
a three-pointer by Elizabeth Gabrielle gave the Lady Eagles a 61-50 advantage.
But Caldwell fought back with the help of Lynch, who scored seven points in a
10-0 run that brought the Cougars to within one, 61-60 with just 31 seconds on
the clock. After a pair of Gabrielle free throws, Caldwell missed a
three-point attempt and a lay-up on their next possession. Two more free
throws by Ginger Williams with five seconds left ended Caldwell's comeback and
put the game away for the Lady Eagles.
Lynch, who helped the Cougars out-rebound Lock Haven 43-33 for the game,
totaled 47 points and 32 rebounds while shooting 54.5 percent from the floor
in the two tournament games. Freeman (pictured) finished with 13 points and
seven boards against Lock Haven, with junior guard Dana Leary
(Bridgewater, NJ/Immaculata) grabbing eight rebounds. Gabrielle paced the Lady
Eagles with 15 points, and Williams recorded a team-best 10 boards to go with
six points and four steals.
The Cougars will play in the University of Nebraska-Omaha's Thanksgiving
Classic on Nov. 25-26, facing the host Mavericks on Saturday, Nov. 25 and
Minnesota State-Mankato on Sunday, Nov. 26.
