CALDWELL FALLS TO MANKATO AT UNO THANKSGIVING CLASSIC

Neb. - The Caldwell College women's basketball team completed play at the
University of Nebraska-Omaha Thanksgiving Classic with a 73-62 loss to
Minnesota State-Mankato Sunday afternoon at Sapp Fieldhouse. The defeat is the
Cougars' third in a row and drops their overall record to 1-3 on the season,
while the Mavericks improve to 4-1.
A 16-3 Mankato run that started five minutes into the first half broke open a
close game and put the Mavericks ahead 24-13 at the 10:46 mark. Two
three-pointers by Flecia Foster and Joanne Noreen opened the run, and a Noreen
three finished it. The Mavericks shot 50.0 percent from the floor in the first
half to take a 42-24 lead at the break.
Momentum stayed with the Mavericks in the second half, as Mankato out-scored
Caldwell 18-5 in the first six minutes of the period to take a commanding
60-29 advantage, the largest lead of the game. The Mavericks maintained a
30-point lead with 9:30 remaining before Caldwell put together a 9-0 run with
five points from sophomore forward Mackenzie Lynch (Wayne, NJ/DePaul
Catholic) and four from junior guard Phylicia Holmes (Roselle,
NJ/Roselle). The Cougars finished the tournament strong, closing out the
contest with a 10-2 spree sparked by four points from junior forward
Melissa Freeman (Cresskill, NJ/Cresskill) and a three from senior guard
Shannon Coyle (Matawan, NJ/St. John Vianney).
Holmes, pictured, recorded her first double-double of the season with 11
points and 10 rebounds to pace Caldwell. Lynch finished with 10 points and
seven boards, while Coyle had three steals to go with eight points. The
Cougars held a 43-39 advantage on the glass for the game. For Mankato, Teresa
Parker, Alex Andrews and Liz Trauger led the way with 12 points each.
The Cougars open Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play on Tuesday, Nov.
28, when they host Bloomfield College in Caldwell's first home game of the
season. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m. at the George R. Newman Center.
