N.J. - The Caldwell College women's basketball team lost a Central Atlantic
Collegiate Conference game to Wilmington College, 84-66 Saturday afternoon
at the George R. Newman Center. With the loss, the Cougars fall to 3-6
overall and 2-3 in the CACC, while the Wildcats improve to 4-2, 3-1 CACC.
Wilmington jumped out to a 13-4 lead early, eventually building a 17-point
advantage, 29-12 with 7:49 left in the first half. The Wildcats still led
36-20 with 2:41 on the clock before the Cougars fought back into the game
with a 10-2 run to close out the half. Sophomore forward Mackenzie Lynch
(Wayne, NJ/DePaul Catholic) tallied six of Caldwell's points in the run as
the Cougars trailed 38-30 at the half.
The Wildcats halted any momentum the Cougars gained at the end of the first
half by rolling to a 17-3 run over the first 4:20 of the second half to take
a commanding 55-33 lead. Caldwell staged another comeback with a 12-2 run of
its own that made the score 72-63 with 5:49 to play. But that's as close as
the Cougars would get, as Wilmington finished the game on a 12-3 spree to
clinch their third conference win in four games.
Lynch finished with 20 points and 10 boards for her third double-double in
four games for Caldwell. Junior guard Khaliqa Davis (Newark,
NJ/Bloomfield Tech) notched season highs in three categories with 15 points,
six steals and five assists. The Wildcats were led by Jamie Gallagher and
Sherrelle Holmes, who each tallied 20 points. Gallagher went 6-of-9 from
three-point range, while Amelia Simmons recorded 15 points and 10 boards in
the win. Wilmington shot a blazing 66.7 percent from the floor in the second
half en route to making 59.2 percent for the game.
The Cougars' next game is Jan. 4, when they host Georgian Court University
in a CACC contest. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. in the Newman Center.
