N.J. - The Caldwell College women's basketball team dropped a Central
Atlantic Collegiate Conference game to the University of the Sciences, 62-54
Tuesday night in the George R. Newman Center. With the loss, the Cougars
fall to 8-4 overall, including a 2-2 mark in the conference, while the
Devils win their second in a row to improve to 4-6, 3-1 CACC.
USP broke open a close game by finishing the first half with a 12-2 run to
take a 33-21 lead at the half. Caitlin Shaw scored the first seven points of
the run for the Devils. The lead would grow to as many as 17 points before
the Cougars got back into the game with a 17-6 run that made the score 50-44
with just over six minutes to play. Senior forward Melissa Freeman
(Englewood, NJ/Cresskill) tallied all eight of her points during the
eight-minute span to spark the run. After the Devils scored six of the next
seven points to lead 56-45, Caldwell cut the deficit to six points twice but
would get no closer, as the Cougars suffered their third consecutive loss.
Senior guard Khaliqa Davis (Newark, NJ/Bloomfield Tech), pictured,
tallied a team-high 15 points and six assists, while senior guard
Phylicia Holmes (Roselle, NJ/Roselle) grabbed nine rebounds. The Cougars
forced 31 USP turnovers and recorded 19 steals, but were unable to overcome
poor shooting from the field, making just 30.5 percent for the game. Shaw
led all scorers with 19 points, while Erin Chesnavich recorded 15 points and
11 boards for USP, which connected on 47.8 percent of their field goal
attempts.
The Cougars continue CACC play with a game at Dominican College on Thursday,
Jan. 10. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. in Orangeburg, N.Y.
