LEEDHAM SELECTED MBWA PLAYER OF THE WEEK

2-2-09
CALDWELL, N.J. – The Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association has chosen Caldwell College sophomore guard Kirsty Leedham (Ellesmere Port, England/Cheshire Acad.) its Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the week ending Feb. 1, the organization announced today. Leedham, who was named the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Player of the Week earlier today, averaged 30.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, 3.0 steals and 2.3 assists over three games last week.

Each week the MBWA chooses a Player of the Week from among the nearly 75 colleges and universities in the tri-state area. The award includes NCAA Division I, II and III players. Teammate Mackenzie Lynch (Wayne, NJ/DePaul Catholic) and senior forward Manny Perez (Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) have received votes for MBWA Player of the Week so far this season, but Leedham is the first to receive the honor.

In an 88-66 victory over Post University on Jan. 27, Leedham set her career high for the second straight game with 43 points on 13-of-24 shooting from the field, including 3-of-6 from three-point range. Her offensive outburst is the highest single-game scoring total in the CACC this season. She also fell one point shy of the school record of 44 points, shared by current teammate Mackenzie Lynch (Wayne, NJ/DePaul Catholic) and former Cougar standout Danielle Ciresi. Leedham followed with a 29-point game at Dominican College on Jan. 29. She wrapped up the week scoring 20 points in a narrow 60-58 loss to Georgian Court University at home on Jan. 31.

For the week, Leedham was 9-of-21 (.429) on three-point attempts and 27-of-33 (.818) from the free throw line. She also made her mark on defense, recording five steals against Post and four against Georgian Court.

Leedham paces the Cougars in scoring at 17.7 points per game, which ranks third in the CACC. She also ranks third in the conference in steals (2.4 per game) and three-pointers made (2.3 per game).

The Cougars, who are 7-11 on the season, continue CACC play on Tuesday, Feb. 3, with a home game against Post University. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. in the George R. Newman Center.
