COUGARS COME BACK TO BEAT NYACK IN OVERTIME9-14-05
The evenly-played match was scoreless until late in the second half, when Nyack's Jenna Cutts headed home a cross from Jess Betts to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead in the 78th minute. Then with just 94 seconds left in the game, a Nyack player was called for a handball in the penalty area, resulting in a penalty kick for Caldwell. Sophomore midfielder Carla Bleiler (Galloway Twp., NJ/Absegami) converted the penalty kick to tie the game at 1-1 and send it into overtime.
Shortly after the first overtime period had begun, freshman midfielder Kristee Paknis (Whiting, NJ/Manchester) sent a pass to Delucca near the top of the Warriors' penalty area. Delucca fired a shot that was initially saved by goalkeeper Whitney Shutt, but the ball deflected off the back of a defender and rolled over the goal line. The goal was Delucca's team-leading fourth of the season.
Freshman goalkeeper Annie LaForge made four saves for the Cougars, while Shutt recorded eight saves in goal for Nyack.
Next up for the Cougars is a non-conference game at New York Tech on Saturday, Sept. 17. Kick-off is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. in Old Westbury, N.Y.
