CALDWELL,
N.J. - Sarah Byers' goal in the 97th minute gave Post University a
3-2 overtime victory over Caldwell College in a Central Atlantic
Collegiate Conference women's soccer match Thursday afternoon at
Caldwell Field. With the loss, the Cougars fall to 4-12 overall and
4-5 in the conference, while the Eagles improve to 4-11-1 on the
season, including a 4-4-1 mark in the CACC.
Six minutes and 45 seconds into the first overtime period, a cross
off a corner kick bounced through the penalty area off several
players before finding Byers in front of the Caldwell goal. Her shot
into an open goal ended the game in favor of the visiting Eagles,
who trailed for most of the contest.
The Cougars opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, when junior
midfielder Samantha Rinks (Corinth, TX/Billy Ryan) collected
a long throw-in from freshman defender Morgan Frankenfield
(Coplay, PA/Whitehall Coplay) and blasted a shot into the net for
her first goal of the season. Then in the 43rd minute, a cross from
Frankenfield slipped through the hands of Post goalkeeper Morgan
Luschenat to junior midfielder Kristee Paknis (Whiting,
NJ/Manchester), who scored her team-leading seventh goal of the year
for a 2-0 lead. Susan Curran finished a pass from Rachel Shivers in
the 60th minute to cut the lead to 2-1. Six minutes later, Caldwell
was called for a handball in its own penalty area. Maria Krug
converted the ensuing penalty kick to tie the game at 2-2.
Freshman goalkeeper Lauren Hoenig (Howell, NJ/Howell) made
two saves for Caldwell, while Post's Luschenat stopped two shots in
the first half and Stephanie Goss recorded one save in 52 minutes of
action. The Cougars led in shots, 12-7 and corner kicks, 6-1.
Next up for Caldwell is a CACC game with Holy Family University on
Saturday, Oct. 20. The game is set to start at 12:00 p.m. at
Caldwell Field.
