CALDWELL WOMEN'S SOCCER ADDS CLASS OF 14

6-30-08
CALDWELL, N.J. – Fourteen student-athletes will be joining the Caldwell College women’s soccer team for the fall of 2008, coach Nate Guagliardi announced. The recruiting class, which includes three transfer students and 11 incoming freshmen, will bolster the Cougars’ roster that returns just five players from last season’s 5-14 squad.

“With the majority of our team graduating this spring, we basically had to bring in an entire team,” Guagliardi said. “We were fortunate to be able to increase our numbers while also attracting several quality players to come to Caldwell. This recruiting class will give us a little bit of everything, from speed to technical players to solid defenders, and I think we can be competitive right away.”

The transfer students include two from junior colleges and one from a Division III school. Junior forward Nicole Laureigh was a NJCAA Division III All-American while at Ocean County College in Toms River, N.J. A native of Lacey Township, N.J., Laureigh led Ocean to the Region 19 title in 2005, then tallied 17 goals and seven assists for 41 points to rank among the national leaders in 2006. Junior midfielder Brianna Diaz from Chili, N.Y., had an outstanding career at Monroe (N.Y.) Community College, where she helped her team place third and fifth at the NJCAA Division I National Tournament the past two years. At the nationals this past fall, Diaz notched two goals and five assists in Monroe’s final two games to clinch fifth place.

Sophomore midfielder Lauren Mastellone comes to Caldwell after recording 16 goals and three assists to earn all-North Atlantic Conference honors as a freshman at Lesley University in Cambridge, Mass. Mastellone, who is from Howell, N.J., attended Monsignor Donovan High School in Lakewood, N.J.

Six of the incoming freshmen are from New Jersey, including teammates Courtney Hatton and Giana Scerbo of Ridgefield Park High School. Hatton notched 18 goals and 76 assists in her career while earning second team all-League honors four times. Scerbo is a three-time, first team all-League performer who scored a school-record 70 goals in her career. Forward Katie Margiotta of Sewell, N.J., was named second team all-County and second team all-South Jersey Group 4 as a senior at Washington Township High School.

Midfielder Ruba Sbeah led Sayreville (N.J.) War Memorial High School in scoring with 11 goals and five assists while being named to the all-Division and NJGSCA All-State teams as a senior. Midfielder Allie Madura helped Kinnelon (N.J.) High School capture the 2006 Group 1 state championship. Forward Marissa Brown is an outstanding athlete who excelled in soccer and basketball at North Arlington (N.J.) High School. The Star-Ledger named her one of the top 20 female athletes in Group 1.

Defender Nikki D’Orsaneo is one of three players from the state of Maryland in this year’s recruiting class. D’Orsaneo was a two-time all-County first team selection at Bowie High School and was chosen her team’s Most Valuable Player as a junior and senior. Midfielder Chelsea Hoover of Hagerstown, Md., was named to the all-County first team three times while leading Smithsburg High School to the Division 1A state Championship in 2005 and 2006. Victoria Cesaro of Owings, Md., was a two-year starter as a goalkeeper and forward at St. Mary’s High School.

Defender Rosalee Edsall of Bellport, N.Y., was her team’s defensive Most Valuable Player and captain as a senior at Bellport High School. The only international player of this year’s class is midfielder Cecilia Westerberg of Uppsala, Sweden. Westerberg, who attends Fyris School in Uppsala, plays for Borje SK in the Swedish second division.

The Cougars lost seven players to graduation from last year’s team that qualified for the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament for the third time in four years after finishing 5-6 in conference play. Three-time all-CACC midfielder Kristee Paknis (Whiting, NJ/Manchester) leads the returning players.
