Head
Coach Nate Guagliardi
Caldwell College '00
Fourth season
After just three seasons as the women’s soccer coach at Caldwell
College, Nate Guagliardi has the program headed in the right
direction. A 2000 graduate of Caldwell, Guagliardi returned to his alma
mater in 2007 and guided the Cougars back to the Central Atlantic Collegiate
Conference Tournament despite having 13 players on the roster. In 2008,
Caldwell won a CACC Tournament game for the first time since 2004 and
advanced to the semifinals after finishing 8-11-1. The turnaround earned
Guagliardi CACC Coach of the Year honors, marking the first time a women’s
soccer coach from Caldwell has won the award.
In
the Cougars’ first season under Guagliardi, the team went 5-14 overall and
5-6 in the conference to finish in a tie for seventh and earn a spot in the
CACC Tournament after not qualifying for postseason play in 2006. With only
five players returning from the 2007 team, Guagliardi brought in 18 new
players and quickly molded his 2008 squad into a contender. The Cougars
finished fourth in the CACC with a 7-3-1 record, the most conference wins
since 2004, and defeated Nyack in the first round of the CACC Tournament.
“Honestly, I was surprised with our results that year because we had so many
new players,” said Guagliardi, whose career record is 19-36-2. “But the team
really came together as the season went on, and we were able to achieve more
than what was expected.”
Last year the Cougars went 6-11-1 and took seventh in the CACC with a 6-5-1
mark in league play. The team played in the CACC Tournament for the third
straight year, losing to Georgian Court in double overtime.
Guagliardi returned to Caldwell after coaching the Saddle Brook High School
boys' soccer team for six years. He took over a team in 2001 that had won
just six games in its previous six seasons combined and led it to its first
conference title in 2003. Saddle Brook also advanced to the finals of the
New Jersey Group 1 North Tournament that year. Guagliardi, who taught social
studies and math at Saddle Brook Middle School for three years, also coached
the junior varsity girls' basketball and baseball teams at Saddle Brook
High. He began his teaching career at St. Gerard School in Paterson, N.J.,
where he taught English for four years.
A native of Belleville, N.J., Guagliardi was an all-State goalkeeper at
Belleville High School before coming to Caldwell College in 1996. In 1997,
Guagliardi became the Cougars' starting goalkeeper and recorded a
school-record 11 shutouts to earn all-Northeast Region honors. His 16 career
shutouts also are the most in the program's history. He graduated in 2000
after majoring in Education and Social Studies.
Guagliardi lives in Pompton Plains, N.J., with his wife Deena. In addition
to his duties as women's soccer coach, Guagliardi also has administrative
roles within the athletics department.
Assistant
Coach Andrew Fraser
Caldwell College ‘08
Second season
Andrew Fraser is back for his second year on the women’s soccer coaching staff following a
standout career for the Cougar men’s soccer team. A standout central
defender for the Cougars from 2004 to 2007, Fraser was a four-time all-CACC
honoree. He also was selected to the all-New England Region team three
times in his stellar career. As a dominating defender and team leader,
Andrew led the Cougars to 47 victories in his four seasons, the most
wins in any four-year period in the history of the program.
Fraser graduated from Caldwell College in 2008 with a degree in
accounting. An outstanding student, he earned a spot on the Central
Atlantic Collegiate Conference All-Academic Team as a sophomore, junior
and senior for posting a cumulative grade-point average of 3.5 or
higher. He also was chosen to the ESPN The Magazine Academic
All-District first team as a senior. In the fall of 2008, Fraser was
selected the Outstanding Student-Athlete for the 2007-08 academic year
by the Collegiate Athletic Administrators of New Jersey.
A native of Kingston, Jamaica, Fraser currently works as an accountant
at Kostka Taylor. He has played for the New Jersey Rangers of the United
Soccer League's Premier Development League for two seasons.
