Head Coach Nate Guagliardi

Caldwell College '00

Second season

Nate Guagliardi is in his second year as the head women's soccer coach at Caldwell College after taking over the program last fall. In his first season, Guagliardi guided the Cougars back to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament despite having 13 players on the roster. Caldwell went 5-14 overall and 5-6 in the conference to finish in a tie for seventh and earn a spot in the CACC Tournament after not qualifying for postseason play in 2006. With only five players returning from last season’s team, Guagliardi brought in 14 new players who will strengthen the program and form the foundation of the future.

Guagliardi, who graduated from Caldwell College in 2000, returns to his alma mater after coaching the Saddle Brook High School boys' soccer team for six years.

"We are glad to have Nate come back to Caldwell and lead our women's soccer program," said Mark A. Corino, Caldwell's Executive Director of Athletics. "He was a standout player when he was here, and he established himself as an excellent coach at the high school level. I'm confident Nate will do an outstanding job here and provide some stability to a program that has a lot of potential."

Guagliardi took over a boys' soccer program at Saddle Brook High School in 2001 that had won just six games in its previous six seasons combined and led the team to its first conference title in 2003. Saddle Brook also advanced to the finals of the New Jersey Group 1 North Tournament that year. Guagliardi, who taught social studies and math at Saddle Brook Middle School for three years, also coached the junior varsity girls' basketball and baseball teams at Saddle Brook High. He began his teaching career at St. Gerard School in Paterson, N.J., where he taught English for four years.

A native of Belleville, N.J., Guagliardi was an all-State goalkeeper at Belleville High School before coming to Caldwell College in 1996. In 1997, Guagliardi became the Cougars' starting goalkeeper and recorded a school-record 11 shutouts to earn all-Northeast Region honors. His 16 career shutouts also are the most in the program's history. He graduated in 2000 after majoring in Education and Social Studies.

"Coming back and giving back to Caldwell College is an exciting opportunity for me," Guagliardi said. "Being a Caldwell alum, I'm looking forward to taking over a program that began when I was a student here and building on the success the team has had the past few years."

Guagliardi lives in Pompton Plains, N.J., with his wife Deena. In addition to his duties as women's soccer coach, Guagliardi also will have administrative roles within the athletics department.

Assistant Coach Abby Shiffler
Monmouth University '05
First season

Abby Shiffler joins the Caldwell College women's soccer team as an assistant coach this season. Shiffler, a former standout goalkeeper at Monmouth University, will assist head coach Nate Guagliardi with the Cougars' goalkeepers and defense.

A four-year starter in goal for Monmouth from 2001-04, Shiffler recorded 280 career saves to rank third on the program's all-time list. She earned all-Northeast Conference second team honors as a freshman while receiving the team's Rookie of the Year award. In 2002, Shiffler helped the Hawks advance to the finals of the NEC Tournament, where they were eliminated in a shootout by Central Connecticut State. As a junior, she ranked second in the conference in both goals-against average and save percentage.

Shiffler graduated from Monmouth in 2005 with a Bachelor's degree in political science. She served as an assistant coach at Fairleigh Dickinson University-Madison in 2006, and has been a goalkeeper trainer in New Jersey and Washington, D.C., for the past three years. A native of Hershey, Penn., Shiffler currently lives in Ocean, N.J.

"Abby will be a nice addition to our team," Guagliardi said. "She has competed at a high level and was successful, and the team will benefit from working with someone with her experience."
