COUGARS TOP USP 5-2 IN OPENER

CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College women's tennis team began the 2004 season with a 5-2 victory over University of Sciences on Saturday afternoon at the Caldwell College tennis courts. Juniors Oksana Manoukian (Old Tappan, NJ/Rutgers) and Erin O'Neill (River Edge, NJ/Barnstable Academy) earned wins in singles and doubles as the Cougars opened their season with a victory for the first time in the past three seasons.

Manoukian teamed with senior Stacy Zafiris (Palisades Park, NY/Palisades Park) to defeat USP's Amanda Bedway and Michele Inzillo 8-3 at No. 1 doubles. The Cougars clinched the doubles point when O'Neill and sophomore Joellen Keaney (Oak Bluffs, MA/Marthas Vineyard Regional) won their match at No. 2 doubles, 8-5.

In singles, Manoukian and O'Neill were victorious in straight sets at first and fourth singles. Junior Kristi Godfrey (West Babylon, NY/West Babylon) won her match at No. 5 singles 6-2, 6-2, then sophomore Danielle O'Connell (South Amboy, NJ/St. John Vianney) won her match in a pro set at No. 6 singles, 8-5.

The Cougars travel to face Fairleigh Dickinson in Madison, N.J., for a match on Monday at 3:30 p.m.
