MANOUKIAN CAPTURES CACC SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP
10-21-06
PHILADELPHIA,
Pa. - Caldwell College senior Oksana Manoukian (Old Tappan, NJ/Northern
Valley Regional) won the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Singles
Tournament on Saturday at the Arthur Ashe Youth Tennis Center, defeating
Philadelphia University's Maggie Smith when Smith was forced to retire before
the third set due to injury. Manoukian, who completes her fall season with a
perfect 21-0 record in singles, becomes the first Caldwell College athlete to
win an individual conference title in any sport.
In Friday's first two rounds, Manoukian earned victories over Katie
Stracquatanio of Philadelphia, 10-3, and Holy Family's Quena Borres, 10-0 to
advance to today's semifinals. She then downed Rupali Parekh of Holy Family,
6-2, 7-6 (7-3) before facing Smith in the final match. Smith took the first
set 6-2, with Manoukian winning the second set 6-4 to even the match. But an
injury forced Smith to retire, giving Manoukian the win and the CACC title.
Over her three-year career at Caldwell, Manoukian has compiled a singles
record of 45-4.
Also competing at the CACC Individual Tournament was sophomore Emilie Skidmore
(Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock Twp.), who lost in the first round to Trish
Ubil of Philadelphia, 10-2. Manoukian also teamed with freshman Brittni
Frantellizzi (Binghamton, NY/Susquehanna Valley) in the doubles
tournament. The duo advanced to the semifinals with an 8-0 victory over Kim
Haig and Bethany Everett of Post University, but lost to the eventual
champions from Holy Family, Parekh and Lauren Neill, 8-4.
