Beginning his third year as women’s tennis coach at Caldwell College, Tim Nellegar hopes to build a program that has been seeking stability for many years.

When Nellegar was hired as head coach in Aug., 2002, it was the third time in four years that there had been a coaching change in women’s tennis.

“I knew then the first thing was to let the kids know that I want to be a part of this program for many years to come,” said Nellegar, himself a Caldwell College graduate. “I’ve always enjoyed coaching, and to be able to help build a program at my alma mater is even more rewarding.”

During his days as a student-athlete at Caldwell, Nellegar earned Academic All-America status as a member of the men’s tennis team. A four-year letterwinner and two-time captain, Nellegar won more singles matches than any other Caldwell player before him. After he graduated in 2000, Nellegar was named an assistant coach for the men’s basketball team for one season. He then served as an assistant with the women’s basketball team for the next two seasons.

Nellegar’s love of coaching has never been questioned. Since his days at Bloomfield High School, where he played tennis and basketball, Nellegar always had aspirations in the coaching field. Along with his duties at Caldwell College, Nellegar teaches fifth grade in Newark, N.J., while coaching boys' basketball at Clifton High School and boys’ tennis at Bloomfield High School. This past spring, Nellegar guided Bloomfield to its first state tournament in five years.

A tireless worker, Nellegar enjoys the challenge associated with recruiting.

“I grew up in Essex County, and I know there is some tremendous tennis talent on the high school level,” he said. “I’m fortunate to know most of the coaches, and I think Caldwell will be a very interesting possibility for upcoming student-athletes.”

Nellegar is the son of John and Rose Nellegar. Younger brother Nick is a 2004 graduate of Caldwell College. Tim married the former Jennifer Chominsky, herself a Caldwell alum, this past July.
